Getting to know Shanni Liang

Please Note: *I DO NOT ACCEPT INSURANCE; I AM AN OUT-OF-NETWORK PROVIDER.* I provide a super-bill/receipt for insurance reimbursement at the end of each month. Payments are made prior to the session. Initial evaluation $400 for 60 minutes, $300 for 45 minutes. *Please expect a text from my office to confirm your booking!* My Story: In New York City, therapy is more accepted now, especially in NYC. You can tell people you go to therapy, and they won’t assume you are “crazy,” but this wasn’t always the case. A decade ago, it was shameful and scary to ask your parents to see a shrink. According to the CDC 2018 report, suicide is the leading cause of death among Asian Americans aged 20-24, responsible for about 33% of deaths in that age group. That percentage falls to 21% for non-Hispanic whites, 15% for people of Hispanic origin, and just under 10% for non-Hispanic Blacks. It was a shameful secret that, as Chinese American females, we had to hide. I remember when I turned 21 and discovered my close friend was seeing an Asian therapist just to adjust to a new life in the United States—and I was shocked! I thought finding a Chinese American therapist would be as rare as unicorns. I didn’t know therapy was an option, and that they also took my insurance. I booked an appointment, and that was how my journey from self-growth to becoming a wounded healer began. My Practice & Training: I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York. I work with people facing a wide variety of life challenges including depression, anxiety, family conflict, career transition, and trauma. I use EMDR and other supportive approaches blending psychodynamic therapy. My upbringing and life experiences provide me with a bi-cultural lens. I see myself as a "collector of stories" and a detective making sense of parts of your life that feel "irrational." It is a safe and warm space for you to process your loss.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is a conversation. During the first session, I learn more about you and listen to your story. I see myself as a "collector of stories" and a detective who aims to make sense of the things in your life that are confusing. I offer a safe and warm space for you to process your loss and therapy with me involves learning and knowing your authentic self better. We will work on understanding and freeing up your conflicts so you have more space for love and work (as Freud said). I also provide direct approaches, such as mindfulness, access to resources, visualization, coping exercises, and EMDR when appropriate for trauma work and if you are ready.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My upbringing and life experiences provide me with the ability to see things through a bicultural lens. My social work training allows me to discuss and address with you how racism and oppression have affected your mental health and your sense of belonging in this world. I offer a safe and warm space for you to process your loss and therapy with me involves learning and knowing your authentic self better.

More information on payments and coverage

I am considered an “out-of-network provider.” Many insurance companies cover out-of-network providers and will reimburse between 60-80% of the cost of sessions. If your plan covers out-of-network providers, you would issue payment to me at the time of service and your insurance will then reimburse you. I issue a monthly “superbill” or itemized receipt, which you would submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement. Insurance benefits can be complicated to navigate, so I’ve provided a step-by-step guide to determining how much your plan covers. I’m happy to answer questions or assist during our consultation. How to Determine Your Out-of-Network Benefits Below is a step-by-step guide to determining if your plan offers out-of-network benefits and how much you would be reimbursed when seeing a therapist that is out-of-network. Call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask the following questions: Does my plan include out-of-network benefits for outpatient behavioral and mental services? What is my annual deductible for out-of-network mental health benefits? How much of this deductible have I met? When does my deductible reset each year? Is there a limit on the number of sessions that my plan will cover annually? Are the following CPT codes for psychotherapy sessions covered: 90791 and 90834? Is there a limit on out-of-pocket expenses per year? How much? (This is the maximum amount you will pay in a plan year; once you exceed this amount, your insurance will pay 100% of all healthcare expenses. This amount resets each year.) What is the coinsurance percentage for mental health services that my plan will cover? (This is the percentage that your insurance will cover once you meet your deductible.) Do I need a referral or pre-authorization to receive services? What is the usual, customary, and reasonable fee (UCR) or the “allowed amount” for psychotherapy? They may tell you that this information is proprietary. This is not true.

Shanni is pure gold! She is an incredible and highly talented therapist. Among the very best. She is also one of the most empathetic people I have met.
Shanni has been able to help me stay touch with my emotions! I haven been able to cry but recently I felt that I can finally let my tears out and it was such an amazing feeling to cry and feel my emotions! Highly recommend Shanni to anyone!
when i started seeing shanni i felt powerless and broken as i was coming out of a very traumatic time in my life. shanni’s deep understanding of trauma, relationships and family systems, as well as her empathy and sound advice, provided the solid foundation i needed to start healing and processing. over two years later i am a completely different person now. nearly everyone i know is shocked at how much i have transformed in terms of my ability to set boundaries and emotionally regulate, and i attribute this to shanni. she has changed my life and i can’t recommend her enough.
Shanni has been really instrumental in my self-discovery journey. She is warm, compassionate, and incredibly invested; during our time together I've always felt seen, heard, and supported. I'm beyond thankful for her guidance.
Very relaxing atmosphere and beautiful office. I found it was very easy to talk to Shanni and she obviously has a lot of training in different aspects of therapy

Her expertise and professionalism are evident in every session. Shanni possesses a remarkable ability to listen attentively and offer insightful guidance tailored to my unique needs. She skillfully navigates through complex emotions and challenges, providing invaluable perspective and support along the way. Through her guidance, I've gained a deeper understanding of myself and developed effective coping mechanisms to navigate life's obstacles. I wholeheartedly recommend Shanni Liang to anyone seeking a compassionate, skilled, and dedicated therapist. Five stars without hesitation!
Shanni was wonderful at helping me navigate past hardships, career stressors and relationships. She has a really lovely and gentle way of teaching calming techniques that cam down the nervous system and other tools that help ensure ou find success outsideof her sessions and beyond.
I’ve seen a couple of therapist over the years, but Shanni has been the best one so far. I’m grateful to have met her and all the work we have done together over the last year.
I am so grateful that I found Shanni a little over a year ago. I have tried several therapists over the years, but never felt as seen or supported as I do by Shanni. We have been able to discuss issues around family dynamics, dating, aging, friendships, career, etc, and I truly feel I am doing better in each of these areas because of her support and guidance. Shanni goes above and beyond, even between sessions, sending suggestions, links, videos, articles in order to further my progress. She strikes a great balance between providing concrete advice, but never pressuring you to take it. Overall, I would highly recommend Shanni!
She is very insightful and has helped me become a better person. She has been able to understand my emotions and perspective and can provide possible solutions to conflicts I’m in. She has helped me so many time in crucial situations, my appreciation for her is indescribable, and I recommend that others visit her.
I have been working on my mental health with Shanni since 9/2022, and I have seen significant improvement in my depression, anxiety, and burnout. Shanni has been very supportive on helping me address my issues with past mental traumas, and she has helped me create healthier boundaries with work and toxic family members/friends. I highly recommend her, especially with helping create addressing depression and anxiety, as well as establishing healthy boundaries, particularly in the context of being an Asian American.
Ms. Shanni is by far, the most understanding and caring therapist, I have ever met. She is slow, and methodical, and I never feel rushed during any of our sessions. She has patience like a saint, and is very understanding of my needs. I never feel like my hands are being held either, and she has never once gave off the appearance of condescension. She works with me, and is very supportive, through my journey. The person I am now, is completely different from the person, she first met. I cannot thank her enough, nor reccomend her enough.
Shanni is a great therapist. She is always on time, respectful, and thoughtful. I appreciate the combined use of EMDR, talk therapy, and practical tools used in sessions. She is knowledgeable and has keen insight into her patients. I highly recommend Shanni!
I've been through a couple of therapists trying to find the right one for me, and I'm very happy that I had stumbled upon Shanni. She takes the time to get to know you and listen to what you need. Even after your session, she reflects on what you've said and brings it to your next session to see how she can help you become stronger. I have worked with Shanni on issues revolving around my family, career, culture, and relationships. The growth I've experienced with her has truly changed my life for the better. Compared to how I was a year ago, I've seen a significant improvement in what I had wanted to accomplish with therapy. While there is still more to go, I feel relieved she is by my side. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for support and positive change.
