Getting to know Shelby Young

I am a trauma-informed therapist with extensive experience utilizing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based treatment that helps individuals process and heal from past trauma while developing healthier, more empowering beliefs about themselves in the present. My clinical work spans a wide range of populations, including children as young as four, adolescents, young adults, and older adults in their 70s and 80s. I specialize in the treatment of Complex PTSD (CPTSD) and PTSD, and I am also deeply committed to supporting parents navigating behavioral challenges, helping them build stronger problem-solving skills and more effective strategies for connection and growth. My approach is person-centered, collaborative, and grounded in respect—I will always meet you where you are, honoring your pace and individual needs in the therapeutic process.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a new client, it’s important to know that our work together will be collaborative, supportive, and centered around your unique experiences and goals. Throughout our sessions, you can expect to gain deeper insight into the patterns behind your behaviors, including why certain actions may not align with your values, or how past experiences may have influenced your choices in relationships—whether in forming or avoiding them. Together, we will identify and develop therapeutic goals that reflect what you hope to achieve from our time together. This space is entirely for you—designed to support your growth, healing, and self-understanding at a pace that feels right for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My therapeutic process begins with understanding the presenting concerns that have brought you to therapy, while also exploring your vision for how you want your life to feel and function moving forward. From there, we work collaboratively to bridge that gap—helping you move toward the life you want to live. I use thoughtful, intentional questions to promote insight, support healing from past trauma, and guide you in reshaping core beliefs about yourself. Whether it’s embracing affirmations like “It’s over, I am safe now,” “I am enough,” or “I am important,” our work will focus on installing the beliefs that support your growth, self-worth, and resilience. Ultimately, my goal is to help you lead a life that aligns with your values, promotes wellness, and cultivates a deep sense of inner peace.

She is very enthusiastic about getting me to try different coping skills. She is very knowledgeable & wise in psychology & human behavior. She listens & is empathetic.
