Shreeja Vachhani, LMSW

Psychotherapist
109 N 12th St, Brooklyn, NY
Hi! I’m Shreeja, a licensed master social worker providing psychotherapy at Transcendent Self Therapy in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I work with individuals and couples navigating trauma, mood challenges, relationship issues, identity questions, and periods of transition or disconnection. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, insightful individuals who may understand themselves intellectually, yet still feel stuck in recurring emotional or relational patterns that are harder to shift alone. My approach is relational, psychodynamic, and deeply collaborative, informed by attachment theory, somatic and mindfulness-based practices, and experiential approaches to therapy. I am especially interested in how early relationships, nervous system adaptations, cultural environments, and survival strategies continue to shape the ways we relate to ourselves and others. Rather than viewing symptoms or coping patterns as something to “fix,” I believe therapy can help us better understand the wisdom, pain, and context from which they emerged. As a bicultural therapist, I also bring a culturally sensitive and systems-aware lens to my work, informed by both lived experience and ongoing learning around identity, intergenerational dynamics, and decolonized approaches to healing. I provide therapy in English, Hindi, and Gujarati.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I tend to work best with clients who are interested in understanding themselves more deeply and honestly - not just reducing symptoms, but exploring the emotional patterns, relational dynamics, protective strategies, and “parts” of themselves that shape their inner world. Much of my work centers around helping people develop a more compassionate and nuanced understanding of themselves, especially the parts that may feel confusing, conflicted, emotionally overwhelmed, overly self-critical, or difficult to access. My therapeutic approach is reflective, emotionally attuned, and collaborative. While insight is important, I believe healing often involves more than simply talking about experiences intellectually. Together, we may explore emotions, body sensations, attachment dynamics, identity, creativity, spirituality, or the stories you carry about yourself and your relationships. I aim to create a space where complexity and humanness are welcome - where you don’t have to reduce yourself to a diagnosis, role, or version of yourself in order to feel understood. Therapy can be challenging at times, but it can also be deeply meaningful and transformative. I see the therapeutic relationship itself as an important part of the healing process, and I approach that responsibility with care, openness, and genuine curiosity about who you are.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach is flexible and tailored to each individual rather than highly structured or one-size-fits-all. Early in therapy, I focus on understanding your emotional world more fully, i.e., your relationships, history, emotional patterns, strengths, fears, values, and the ways you’ve learned to navigate pain, connection, vulnerability, or uncertainty over time. As our work develops, we begin noticing recurring emotional and relational patterns together while building greater emotional awareness & capacity, self-compassion, and clarity around what may be happening beneath the surface. Depending on your needs, our work may include psychodynamic exploration, parts-work, mindfulness, somatic awareness, emotional processing, or more practical support around regulation and navigating daily life. Some sessions may feel reflective and exploratory, while others may focus more directly on immediate challenges, relationships, or transitions unfolding in the present. I view therapy as a space where insight, relationship, embodiment, and meaning-making can come together to support meaningful and lasting change - not by becoming someone entirely different, but by relating to yourself with greater understanding, authenticity, and freedom.
