Getting to know Sonakshi Gurnani

Our mental health is equally important as our physical well-being and I believe in creating a safe, non judgmental and open environment to foster introspection and personal growth. Due to our life circumstances and unique experiences, our thought patterns and behaviors may need to be reassessed and reframed. I grew up in a multicultural environment interacting with people of varied backgrounds and I deeply understand the complexities culture and migration can have on our mental health. I specialize in the treatment of mood and personality disorders as well as draw elements from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Schema Therapy in my practice to help deliver the best treatment possible. I also have experience in couples counseling utilizing the Gottman Method approach. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Syracuse University and a Masters in Mental Health Counseling from New-York Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences. As a complement to my clinical training, I have experience working in an Intensive Psychiatric Unit with adolescent and adult populations with a variety of severe psychiatric conditions. Previously, I have also worked at the same hospital in the Borderline Personality Disorder Unit which specializes in treating individuals with comorbid personality, mood and substance use disorders. I am fluent in English and Hindi and I look forward to working with you in the future.
