Sophie Angelique Desnoyers, MA

Sophie Angelique Desnoyers, MA

Psychotherapist
34 Plz St E, Ste P109, Brooklyn, NY
Sophie is a mental health counselor who sees each client's potential for growth within a safe and honest therapeutic space. She appreciates the risk clients take when sharing their struggles and stories. In honoring that risk, Sophie reminds clients every step of the way of their power. Pain, distress, and discomfort can inform us about the ways we see, move through, and live in the world. Sophie encourages clients to explore these pain points and move forward with a new perspective-more in alignment with their values and goals. Sophie primarily works through an integrated, eclectic approach, incorporating acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, and mindfulness in her work with clients. She helps clients reflect on the role of early life experiences in current behavior. Sophie also believes laughter is therapeutic and will find appropriate moments for the occasional corny joke or overly specific metaphor. Sophie approaches therapy from a social justice framework and trauma-informed lens, acknowledging the structures at play in our broader society. She aims to understand how social inequities and injustice inform the narratives clients bring into therapy. Her experience centers around individuals who struggle with identity conflicts, life transitions, depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicidal urges. She is LGBTQ+ affirmative and racial justice allied. Sophie earned her Master's in Counseling from New York University. Prior to joining Roots and Branches, she worked as a Mental Health Counseling Intern at a Brooklyn-based counseling center and a crisis counseling hotline. What should a new client know about working with you?

PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE NOT REIMBURSABLE BY ANY MEDICARE OR MEDICAID PLAN ***Please be aware that you must have a 15-min informational appointment prior to your appointment with Sophie and documents that must be completed via our portal prior 24-hours prior to your appointment time. Our practice name is Roots and Branches Therapy. After you book your initial therapy session on ZocDoc you will get a call, email, or text from our team to schedule a 15-minute informational appointment with the clinical director of Roots and Branches Therapy, Nicole Gonzalez. The purpose of this appointment is to (1) ensure we are able to provide the services you are looking for, (2) discuss insurance/financial questions, (3) decide if you will meet in-person or via telehealth. Nicole will also answer any questions you have. After your informational appointment, Nicole will then send you intake documents via our portal that must be completed before your first session with your therapist.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session with all our therapists will be approximately 60-minutes and every weekly session thereafter will be 45 minutes. For individuals, our therapists will begin by taking your life history to better understand the context for your current goals and challenges. Over the next few weeks, you and your therapist will decide upon your goals for treatment. Each week, you will have the opportunity to process traumas, share challenges you are facing, celebrate victories, learn tools/techniques and strategize/role-play how to use them. Over time, your therapist will offer insights into your behaviors, validate your emotions, and help you become more connected, more effective, and less symptomatic. Couples therapy is a similar process with a few exceptions in the intake process. Couples will meet for 1 (occasionally 2) sessions where they will share their history as a couple. After the first session, you will complete a Gottman couples assessment online that will help us quickly identify your strengths and challenges as a couple. In the next two sessions, your therapist will meet with each member of the couple individually to take their life history and understand the relationship in the context of their individual story. In the fourth session, you will review the results of the assessment and any insights your therapist has based on the prior sessions. Together, you will prioritize where to focus treatment. Each week, you will address current/past hurts/challenges as well as learn and practice skills to help you cope with them.
