“Stephanie is a fantastic therapist. She is loving, understanding and caring. She doesn’t judge but is challenging and pushes you to be the best person you can. She is easy to talk to and know how to make you feel at ease and comfortable. In a good way, she helps you feel vulnerable and gets you to open up. I feel I can tell her anything. This helps her go deep to the root of your issues. Therapy sessions fly by and are always productive. One of her best traits is she is extremely punctual and is always available to help. She is happy to communicate outside of therapy sessions. You never feel alone.”

Getting to know Stephanie Barbour

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 25 years of experience supporting individuals, couples, and families across a wide range of mental health and substance use concerns. I have worked in diverse settings with adolescents, young adults, and adults, helping clients navigate challenges related to substance abuse, depression, stress, work–life balance, anxiety, relationships, and self-esteem. Licensed in both Virginia and Washington, D.C., I provide counseling to clients across these regions. My therapeutic approach is collaborative and client-centered—recognizing that each person is the guide of their own journey. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)- and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)-based strategies, integrating evidence-based skills with wellness practices such as physical exercise to promote mental well-being. Together, we can build the tools and insights needed to strengthen mental health, improve relationships, and enhance overall quality of life. Service options: Couples/Marriage Counseling, Family Counseling, Individual Counseling

What should a new client know about working with you?

I provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and life challenges. My approach is collaborative — I meet you where you are, help clarify your goals, and equip you with practical tools and insights for meaningful, lasting change. I value honesty, curiosity, and courage in therapy. You can expect a mix of reflection, skill-building, and guidance that honors your pace and your unique journey. Whether you are navigating anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, life transitions, or self-esteem concerns, my goal is to help you feel heard, understood, and empowered.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work begins with understanding you — your goals, challenges, and what brought you to therapy. In the first sessions, we focus on building trust, clarifying priorities, and identifying patterns that may be holding you back. From there, I tailor strategies and interventions to your needs, combining reflection, practical tools, and skill-building. Progress is collaborative: we check in regularly, adjust the approach as needed, and work toward sustainable growth, whether you are managing anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or life transitions. Throughout, my goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered to make meaningful change.
