Getting to know Stephanie Grant

The practice does not accept Medicaid. Serving the community of New York, NY, Mrs. Stephanie Prestia is a licensed mental health clinician who specializes in comprehensive pre-surgical psychological evaluations. Her areas of focus include bariatric surgery assessments, spinal cord stimulator (SCS) evaluations, chronic pain management evaluations, and cosmetic surgery psychological clearances. Mrs. Prestia is dedicated to supporting individuals preparing for medical procedures that require a thorough psychological evaluation to ensure emotional readiness, appropriate expectations, and the ability to engage in long-term treatment or lifestyle changes. She holds a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Hunter College, City University of New York, and a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a concentration in Social Work from St. Francis College. Mrs. Prestia brings a structured, evidence-based, and compassionate approach to each evaluation, ensuring alignment with medical and surgical program requirements while maintaining a patient-centered experience. At this time, Mrs. Prestia provides pre-surgical psychological evaluations only and does not offer ongoing psychotherapy or treatment for other mental health conditions through this practice. Mrs. Prestia is currently paneled with Cigna only. Clients with other commercial insurance plans may choose to proceed using out-of-network benefits. If you elect to book using out-of-network coverage, the practice can provide a superbill upon request for submission to your insurance carrier for potential reimbursement. Please note that reimbursement is determined solely by your insurance plan, and the provider and practice are not responsible for coverage decisions or reimbursement outcomes. Please check your insurance benefits prior to booking, as out-of-pocket costs may be higher than in-network pricing depending on your plan. Mrs. Prestia conducts evaluations via secure telehealth.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am currently accepting new clients seeking comprehensive pre-surgical psychological evaluations, including bariatric surgery assessments, spinal cord stimulator (SCS) evaluations, chronic pain management evaluations, and cosmetic surgery psychological clearances. Services are available via telehealth or in-person to best accommodate your needs. The practice is focused exclusively on pre-surgical psychological evaluations at this time, allowing me to provide a thorough, specialized, and supportive experience throughout the assessment process. We are currently paneled with Cigna only and also work with clients who have other insurance plans utilizing out-of-network benefits. While we are not directly contracted with most insurance providers, clients with out-of-network coverage may be eligible for partial reimbursement. We understand this may raise questions, and our approach is intentional—prioritizing quality of care above all else. Each evaluation is comprehensive, evidence-based, and patient-centered, designed to assess not only candidacy but also emotional readiness, coping strategies, and long-term preparedness for the lifestyle changes associated with your procedure. Our goal is not simply to determine if you are an appropriate candidate, but to ensure you feel informed, supported, and confident moving forward. Once your intake forms are completed, you will meet directly with a licensed clinician who has specialized experience in pre-surgical psychological evaluations. Our approach is professional, compassionate, and aligned with medical and surgical program requirements, while also ensuring you feel heard and supported during this important step in your journey. Please note: You are responsible for any late cancellation or no-show fees in accordance with practice policy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My work with pre-surgical clients is grounded in a comprehensive, compassionate, and evidence-based approach to psychological evaluation. I understand that these procedures are not simply medical interventions—they often represent major life transitions that can affect emotional health, relationships, identity, daily functioning, and long-term adjustment. As part of the evaluation process, you may be asked to complete structured Millon Behavioral Medicine Diagnostic (MBMD) psychological questionnaires that align with the type of assessment you are receiving, whether for bariatric surgery, spinal cord stimulator placement, chronic pain management treatment, or cosmetic surgery clearance. These measures help provide a well-rounded understanding of your emotional functioning, coping strategies, expectations, and overall readiness, ensuring that each evaluation is both thorough and clinically sound. Evaluations may be completed at one of our office locations or virtually through secure telehealth, depending on your preference and the nature of the referral. During the assessment, I take time to explore the factors most relevant to your procedure and overall well-being. This may include emotional readiness, coping skills, stress management, support systems, mental health history, pain-related functioning, body image concerns, relationship with food, and the ability to adapt to the lifestyle changes or treatment expectations associated with the procedure. My goal is not to simply “clear” or “deny” someone, but to ensure that you feel informed, supported, and psychologically prepared for the journey ahead. I work collaboratively and without judgment, creating a space where you can speak openly and honestly. All evaluations are conducted in alignment with medical and surgical program requirements.
