Getting to know Stephen Boegehold

I am a psychotherapist in New York and work best with individuals and couples seeking to understand the internal and external conflicts underlying their present struggles. I enjoy exploring issues such as anxiety, depression, perfectionism, creative blocks, relational difficulties, self-esteem, gender roles/socialization, and creating purpose. I welcome members of the LGBTQ+ communities and particularly enjoys working with men on sex and gender-related issues. A collaborative approach during therapy sessions driven by empathy and curiosity is my priority. While my approach to therapy is rooted in psychodynamics, I integrate experiential, behavioral, and mindfulness-based approaches where appropriate. This integrative approach is designed to illuminate connections between past and present, develop tolerance and curiosity for the present moment, and clarify intra- and inter-personal relationships. Although changes and suffering are inevitable, therapy can help make sense of them and ultimately find meaning. Before practicing, I earned my MSEd in mental health counseling from Hunter College.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My work as psychotherapist and improvising musician are in close conversation, and my ongoing discoveries of their reciprocal nature continues to inform and deepen my therapeutic approach. This means that I prioritize a collaborative approach driven by empathy and curiosity, and that my attention is always on what’s happening right here, right now. I work best with people seeking to understand the internal and external conflicts underlying their present struggles. I enjoy exploring issues such as anxiety, depression, perfectionism, creative blocks, relational difficulties, self-esteem, gender roles/socialization, and creating purpose. I welcome members of the LGBTQ+ communities, and particularly enjoy working with men on sex- and gender-related issues.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I work collaboratively with my clients throughout the therapeutic process. It’s critical to establish both a sense of safety in our relationship and what we wish to accomplish together. Once this foundation of our relationship is created, we will work to bring attention to both your present experiences and those that precede them, maintaining your safety and appropriate pacing throughout. By deepening your awareness of these aspects of your life, we can begin to better understand what’s gotten you here, where you’d like to go, and how you might be able to get there. Therapy is not always easy or comfortable, but I will work with you to ensure that it’s done collaboratively, safely, and at a pace you can manage.
