Getting to know Dr. Stephen Lange

I am a spouse, father, grandfather, and am owned by a cat. Professionally, I have worked as a psychologist for 29 years, serving diverse and underserved populations, including elders and veterans. I am a former commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service and a current member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. I’m a calm, nonjudgmental listener who values humor and accepts people as they are - regardless of race, religion, national origin, or sexual identity and orientation. I also understand firsthand what it means to live with mental health conditions. I have depression, currently in remission, and ADHD, which is treated but ever-present. As a family member of people in recovery from addiction, I hold deep respect for Bill W. and Dr. Bob and the recovery community they founded. My Texas psychologist license number is 39067. License status can be confirmed via the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council online verification system by searching for “Texas BHEC online license verification” and entering my name or license number.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe the goal of psychotherapy is to help people live the quality of life they desire, with nurturing relationships, emotional and physical health, restful sleep, meaningful work (if appropriate), and fulfilling leisure time. As a psychologist, my most important task is to listen with understanding and compassion.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session has three main goals: first, to help you feel welcome; second, to understand what brings you to therapy; and third, to explore relevant history and life circumstances that affect your current quality of life.
