“I have been working with Sybil for about 1.5 years, and it has honestly changed my life. I've worked with several mental health counselors over the years, and Sybil has been the most conscientious, holistic, and informed provider, by far. Her approach to somatic therapy has helped me to become more mindful, and less reactive. My method of thinking has shifted to one that is more supportive of my own experience, and I have had significantly reduced episodes of trauma responses and panic attacks. I feel safer in my body. I have grown to shift my expectations for safe and loving relationships, of all kinds. This is not just talk therapy -- this is an evolution in the way you inhabit your body. She has changed therapy into something that I genuinely look forward to, each week.”

Getting to know Sybil Ottenstein

I know that a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship is the foundation for transformative healing experiences. At Brooklyn Psychedelic Therapy, we offer both individual and couples somatic psychotherapy and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) for people who want healing and growth but have struggled to achieve the sustainable peace they seek. I hold a Master's in Mental Health Counseling from Fordham University, which informs my compassionate and evidence-based approach. We combine the transformational effects of expanded states of consciousness with the safety and trust of the therapeutic relationship. Following Ketamine treatment, many say that one round (4-8 sessions) of KAP equates to years of talk therapy alone.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic style is honest, nurturing, fierce and at times, playful. I honor your resilience, hold your darkness with reverence, and celebrate progress and possibility with you. I bring my whole self into the room — I’ll be laughing with you and crying with you as we work together to navigate whatever arises. My work is gentle, slow and intention-focused. I value the creation of a safe and trusting relationship above all else. As a somatic therapist, I center the wisdom of your body to guide us to your deepest emotions and truest Self. I am trained in a number of somatic and mindfulness based modalities including The Hakomi Method, Somatic Experiencing and IFS.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I offer individual and couples somatic therapy as well as Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) in my bright and warm Brooklyn office. For "traditional" talk and somatic therapy, I begin with an hour long intake, and follow that up with weekly 45-minute sessions. For KAP work, we will begin with an hour long intake, and then hold 4-5 "preparatory" sessions. This gives us time to get to know each other, and build a safe and trusting rapport. Many find that the more comfortable the therapeutic container, the deeper the work can go. We will then hold a series of 3-8 Ketamine sessions, depending on your needs. We recommend Ketamine sessions be three hours long, allowing us ample time to settle in, connect, create an intentional space, have a 1-2 hour trip and finally process and integrate what you experienced. We will follow each Ketamine session with weekly integration sessions. Integration sessions follow within a couple of days to take advantage of the neuroplasticity Ketamine creates in the brain, the ability to break free from “stuck” emotional responses and patterns and create new habits and beliefs. I emphasize creating a safe “set and setting” above all else— I’ll be there to support you throughout the journey, helping you to make meaning of the experience and maximize the beneficial effects of neuroplasticity in the days and weeks to come. Clients often leave KAP sessions feeling inspired, enlightened, humbled and more deeply connected to themselves.

Sybil is a kind, caring and practical therapist. I have been working with her for a few years now and she couldn’t have made my journey into therapy any easier. Her patience and multi-pronged approach to problem solving would make her a great fit for a wide variety of clients seeking therapy.
Sybil has a warm kindness to her that I didn’t experience while speaking to other therapists. Immediately, I felt like I was in a safe, nonjudgmental environment where I’m really being listened to and heard. Sybil is someone you can build trust with at your own pace. And I’ve gotten so much benefit and help from every session. I’d strongly recommend her to anyone thinking about engaging in therapy.
Sybil is a sharp and committed therapist who finds a way to balance the need to push clients beyond their zones of comfort with a respect for boundaries. Sessions with Sybil are not only effective, resulting in the formulation of skills and tools applicable to daily challenges, but also often enjoyable due to her humour and warmth. Sybil makes a concerted effort to remember and refer back to information or issues already discussed, which enhances contiguity and overall trust. I would strongly recommend Sybil to any prospective client.
