Maybe words like “healing,” “growth,” and “self-care” do not really speak to you. You may simply know that you have been stressed, distracted, irritable, unmotivated, or stuck in a situation that is not getting better on its own. You might be navigating a major transition, questioning the direction your life is taking, struggling in a relationship, or feeling overwhelmed by pressure and expectations. I offer a straightforward, collaborative place to talk about what is happening and determine what might actually help. My role is not to tell you how to live your life. I bring thoughtful questions, perspective, and practical tools, while you bring the experience of knowing yourself and your circumstances. Together, we will make the problem more specific, look for patterns, and test more workable ways of responding. My approach is grounded in person-centered counseling and incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and strengths-based strategies. Depending on what you need, our work may involve understanding recurring patterns, reconsidering unhelpful expectations, building practical coping skills, or identifying the smallest useful next step. I also use brief progress measures so we can notice what is changing and adjust when something is not helping. I work with people facing anxiety, stress, depression, burnout, relationship difficulties, questions of identity or purpose, and uncertainty about what comes next. I have a particular interest in supporting men and young adults, while welcoming clients from a wide range of backgrounds and life stages. My practice is a supervised private practice. It is owned and/or managed by a master’s level, non-independent licensee under Board-approved clinical supervision pursuant to A.A.C. R4-6-211. The Board-approved clinical supervisor of this practice is Julia Spain LPC.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is conversational, straightforward, and collaborative. I will listen carefully, ask questions, help you notice patterns, and offer practical ideas when they may be useful. At times, we may slow down to better understand an experience. At other times, we may focus on a specific decision, coping strategy, conversation, or next step. I will not tell you how you are supposed to live your life or assume that one approach works for everyone. You do not need to arrive with a polished explanation of what is wrong or a perfectly defined goal for counseling. It is enough to know that something feels difficult, unclear, or no longer workable. Part of our first few conversations will be figuring out what is happening, what you would like to be different, and where it makes sense to begin.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session gives us time to understand what brings you in, how the concern is affecting different parts of your life, and what you hope counseling might help you change. I will ask about your current circumstances, relevant history, existing strengths and supports, and anything else that may help us see the fuller picture. You do not need to arrive with everything figured out or know exactly what your goals should be. We will use that conversation to collaboratively identify your priorities and begin developing a treatment plan. Rather than deciding for you what counseling should focus on, we will translate your concerns into goals that feel relevant, realistic, and specific enough to guide our work. We will also discuss what approaches may be useful, how we might recognize progress, and whether my style feels like a good fit for what you need. The plan is not permanent; we can revisit and adjust it as your circumstances or priorities change. After the intake, a typical session begins with checking in and deciding what would be most useful to discuss that day. We may explore a current situation, examine a recurring pattern, practice a coping strategy, work through a decision, or identify a practical next step. I also use brief progress measures at appropriate points so we can notice changes and adjust our approach when needed. The process is structured enough to remain purposeful while flexible enough to respond to what matters most to you.
