“I started therapy with Tra at the start of Covid and she has been an invaluable support in my life. Her ability to ask the right questions and make me think about what's going on has been transformative. She is also very responsive and punctual, which I appreciate. I would highly recommend Tra to anyone, particularly those who are looking for a therapist who truly understands the complexities of being an Asian American. She has been a true partner in my healing journey, and I am so grateful for her wisdom and guidance over the years. ”

Getting to know Tra Hoang

I’m a licensed psychotherapist specializing in working with high-achieving individuals from minority backgrounds who struggle with stress, anxiety, imposter syndrome, perfectionism, life transitions, negative self-image, relationship issues, and depression. I understand the unique difficulties faced by this demographic, including cultural expectations and societal pressures, family dynamics, generational traumas, workplace discrimination, and the fear of failure. I also help second- and third-generation individuals navigate the challenges that come with privilege and wealth, including feelings of guilt, shame, and the pressure to succeed. I hold a Master’s in Clinical Social Work from Columbia University, which has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to provide compassionate, culturally sensitive care tailored to each client’s experience.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm, and highly attuned to the relationship between your thoughts, feelings, body, and behaviors. I utilize techniques from insight oriented therapy (Psychodynamic), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Attachment theories, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions with me usually last 45 minutes. During the first session, I will typically conduct an initial assessment and gather information about the your concerns, background, and goals for therapy. In subsequent sessions, we will work collaboratively to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This may involve discussing specific events or experiences, examining patterns of behavior or thinking, or exploring emotions that may be difficult for you to express.

I had a great first session with Dr. Hoang. She was easy to talk to and seemed to understand the specific issues I was struggling with. Looking for more sessions with her in the future.

I have seen Tra for the past two years. I had no prior therapy experience before seeing her and so was very anxious at first. I had a lot of stress from work and was in an unhappy relationship. Tra has a way to put me at ease with her calm and comforting demeanor. Comparing myself with who I was, I feel that I deal better with self-criticism, I am more confident, and generally just more comfortable with myself. What surprised me, and still surprises me even now after two years, is how well Tra can listen and read between the lines of what I tell her, and give me insightful feedbacks. I look forward to more sessions with her and would definitely recommend!

Tra is great. In our initial session she was listening to what I stated were my requirements and goals but was also able to offer feedback and enable me to adopt course corrections to ensure that I am on the right path towards reaching my goals.
