Getting to know Troy Vázquez-Cain

He/Him A relationally-oriented integrative psychotherapist, Troy specializes in working with adult LGBTQ+ populations including issues related to the intersections of mental health, gay male identity, and living with HIV. Troy's approach to effective psychotherapy is grounded in a trusted relationship between client and therapist; one which promotes healing past trauma and fosters healthy risk- taking and exploration. From this perspective, he creates a therapeutic environment that supports each client in their journey toward self-discovery, self-acceptance, and an increased sense of wholeness and strength. He integrates a variety of theoretical perspectives and clinical modalities in his work and tailors his approaches to meet the individual needs of each client. Troy’s practice includes individuals, couples, families, and groups experiencing an array of mental health issues and symptoms including depression, anxiety, social isolation, compulsion and impulsivity, relationship problems, characterological challenges, and perfectionism. He has worked with clients of diverse cultural backgrounds and identities and his interventions are grounded in anti-racist, trauma-informed, affirming, humanistic, strengths-based approaches. Troy supports people from all sexual orientations and gender identities and has served the LGBTQ+ community throughout his mental health career, particularly folks who identify as transgender and gender diverse as well as individuals living with or directly impacted by HIV and AIDS. Troy is an honors alumnus from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College where he received his Master of Social Work degree and he is an undergraduate alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is passionate about helping people gain new perspectives on themselves and others and engage with strategies that help change their lives for the better.
