Getting to know Vanessa Williams

Vanessa is a mental health counselor at Roots and Branches Therapy. She nurtures a genuine connection with her clients through her warm, accepting presence, contagious smile, and wonderful sense of humor. Maya Angelou said, “There is no greater agony than bearing the untold story inside you.” Each person’s story shapes who they are, and some stories are a burden to carry alone—one that is relieved when met with empathy. Vanessa considers it an honor to be with clients as they share their untold story, gain greater self-knowledge, and manifest the story that is yet to come. She incorporates a wide range of modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Gottman Couples Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. Vanessa welcomes the opportunity to work with clients of all races, genders, sexualities, religions, nationalities/ethnicities, and all relationship types. Vanessa earned her Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from New York University. Prior to joining Roots and Branches, she worked in another private practice with individual adults and couples. There, she supported couples experiencing challenges with sex, pre-marital concerns, separation/divorce, and general communication and conflict. Vanessa also worked at CityLink Psychological Services, where she gained experience with adolescents and knowledge of this crucial period of development. Currently, Vanessa is an active member of the American Counseling Association and the American Mental Health Counseling Association (AMHCA). Vanessa’s out-of-network fee is $190 per session; superbills and a free app are available for out-of-network reimbursement. PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE NOT REIMBURSABLE BY ANY MEDICARE OR MEDICAID PLAN. Please be aware that you must have a 15-minute informational appointment prior to your appointment with Vanessa, and documents must be completed beforehand.

What should a new client know about working with you?

****Vanessa’s out-of-network fee is $225/session, superbills and a free app are available for out-of-network reimbursement. PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE NOT REIMBURSABLE BY ANY MEDICARE OR MEDICAID PLAN ***Please be aware that you must have a 15-min informational appointment prior to your appointment with Vanessa and documents that must be completed via our portal prior 24-hours prior to your appointment time. Our practice name is Roots and Branches Therapy. After you book your initial therapy session on ZocDoc you will get a call, email, or text from our team to schedule a 15-minute informational appointment with the clinical director of Roots and Branches Therapy, Nicole Gonzalez. The purpose of this appointment is to ensure we are able to provide the services you are looking for and discuss insurance/financial questions. Nicole will also answer any questions you have. After your informational appointment, Nicole will then send you intake documents via our portal that must be completed before your first session with your therapist.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session with all our therapists will be approximately 60-minutes and every weekly session thereafter will be 45 minutes. For individuals, our therapists will begin by taking your life history to better understand the context for your current goals and challenges. Over the next few weeks, you and your therapist will decide upon your goals for treatment. Each week, you will have the opportunity to process traumas, share challenges you are facing, celebrate victories, learn tools/techniques and strategize/role-play how to use them. Over time, your therapist will offer insights into your behaviors, validate your emotions, and help you become more connected, more effective, and less symptomatic. Couples therapy is a similar process with a few exceptions in the intake process. Couples will meet for 1 (occasionally 2) sessions where they will share their history as a couple. After the first session, you will complete a Gottman couples assessment online that will help us quickly identify your strengths and challenges as a couple. In the next two sessions, your therapist will meet with each member of the couple individually to take their life history and understand the relationship in the context of their individual story. In the fourth session, you will review the results of the assessment and any insights your therapist has based on the prior sessions. Together, you will prioritize where to focus treatment. Each week, you will address current/past hurts/challenges as well as learn and practice skills to help you cope with them.
