Getting to know Wenci (Alisa) Wang

Ms. Wenci Wang is a psychotherapist at Counseling Practice in New York, NY. She offers in-person and virtual consultations to patients with emotional, behavioral, and mental health issues. She speaks English and Mandarin. Ms. Wang maintains a safe and comfortable therapy space, enabling her patients to express themselves freely. She prepares individualized treatment plans based on each person’s unique concerns, needs, and goals. Ms. Wang earned her master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University and holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is committed to helping everyone overcome challenges, achieve positive outcomes, and enjoy meaningful lives. ***Message from Ms. Wenci Wang: I often think about a quote by the English psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott: “To my client, who paid to teach me.” It reminds me that therapy is a two-way process of learning and growth. I work well with individuals who are trying to understand themselves more deeply and create a meaningful narrative about who they are. I see therapy as a mirror - one that helps you come closer to your true self with compassion and honesty. Having lived in different cultures and experienced what it meant to shift from being similar to many to being similar to few, I bring a sensitivity to questions of identity, relationships, and transition. My therapeutic approach is grounded in psychodynamic and analytic theories, and I like to integrate IFS language to explore different parts of your world. Together, we will create a space where all parts of you are welcomed, and you can truly be heard without judgment. In that space, we can explore how your past may still live within you today, and how your relationship with yourself shapes the way you connect with others - so you can find more clarity, ease, healing, and a deeper sense of self-understanding.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I’ve learned that my answer to this question shifts depending on who I’m working with. Because of that, I don’t expect you to have any prior understanding of what therapy “should” look like before our first session. I see therapy as a collaborative and highly individual process—something we shape together rather than follow a preset model. One thing I do want you to know is that I also have my own therapist. I believe that staying connected to my own inner work allows me to better support the people I work with, and to hold their experiences with care and humility.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I see therapy as an ongoing movement between "getting to know you" and "doing the work". In the first session, my goal is to understand who you are as a person while also beginning to identify the main concerns that bring you to therapy. From there, we may identify a treatment goal that helps guide our work—one that we check in with and adjust as therapy unfolds. As your needs shift, new goals may naturally emerge, and the process continues to evolve. Therapy can be short-term or long-term, depending on where you are in your life. I work flexibly and collaboratively, shaping the process to fit your personality, needs, and hopes for therapy.
