Getting to know Whestley Spangler

Hello, I'm Whestley. I've been dedicated to the field of counseling since 2003 and became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2010. My journey began with a counseling degree from Lynchburg College (now University of Lynchburg), and since then, I've worn many hats in the mental health field, including roles in case management, outpatient therapy, and community mental health. I also had the opportunity to work as a behavioral health consultant to Medicaid, which broadened my understanding of the healthcare system and the unique challenges faced by those within it. Additionally, I volunteer as a counselor for the local Critical Incident Stress Management Team, supporting first responders who may be experiencing stress from their demanding work. This volunteer work is incredibly fulfilling and allows me to give back to those who serve our community so selflessly. My areas of specialty include depression and anxiety counseling, existential depression, substance use disorder counseling, relationship concerns, self-esteem issues, LGBTQ+ concerns, cultural counseling, and human development. I believe in a holistic approach to therapy, where we work together to understand and address the root causes of your challenges, fostering growth and resilience. I am a native of Virginia but spent some time living in Colorado in the 90s before returning home. I'm married, have a wonderful daughter, and share my home with five very precocious cats. In my free time, I enjoy sports, particularly basketball, and love outdoor adventures like hiking, paddling, and caving. I also have a passion for writing, mostly on self-help topics related to mental health and understanding personality types.
