Wright Doss, LCSW - C

Psychotherapist
MD
With 23 years of clinical experience and a Master’s in Social Work from The Catholic University of America, I have helped clients manage anxiety and depression related to work stress, cancer diagnoses, chronic illnesses, and other significant life changes. I specialize in working with professionals who feel burned out or uncertain about their next career steps. I have successfully guided many to rekindle their passion for their current work or discover new paths that inspire them. In the DMV area, our careers often shape much of our identity. Learning to find balance in this aspect of life enhances our overall sense of self. I also specialize in supporting those facing chronic illness. My unique approach helps you better understand and adapt to the changes in your life as you adjust to your "new norm." I provide a safe and private space to process the impact of illness and assist you in moving forward with your life. Your first appointment will be a time of discovery and reflection for both of us. I want you to feel confident in my understanding of you and my skills as a therapist by creating an environment where you feel safe and validated. From there, we can work together toward a better life. I look forward to meeting you!

What should a new client know about working with you?

The most important thing as a therapist is making sure that I create and maintain is safe validating environment for my clients. It is crucial that you are comfortable with our therapeutic relationship and that if your needs are not being met, that we resolve those in therapy. As a therapist I have training in specific modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and other techniques. These are all evidence based therapies that have proven to help clients effectively manage their emotions and how to create change in their life. I challenge my clients to develop a vision for change in their lives. My job, in part, will be to identify the correct intervention for us to use. I will explain these interventions to you with the goal of you being able to practice these skills independently .

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first two sessions will be our opportunity to get a complete picture of what you can gain from therapy, and how to attain those goals. I will also provide you with education on skills or strategies which may help you in the short term to stabilize any crisis you might be experiencing. At the beginning of each session, I typically ask my clients how they are feeling, and about how they are progressing towards their goals. We will review skills or strategies discussed in previous sessions. My goal is to help you to move towards attaining your goals. If, of course, on a given day, there is something that has come up that you need to discuss, I am always flexible to meet your needs on that day.
