Getting to know Yongyan Zhang

Mr. Yongyan Zhang is a skilled psychotherapist. He practices at Manhattan Creative Arts Therapy PLLC in New York, NY. He offers both in-person and virtual sessions. Mr. Zhang earned his master's degree in social work from Columbia University. His educational background provides a foundation for understanding the social, emotional, and personal factors that can influence an individual's experiences and relationships. His practice provides clients with space to explore personal experiences, emotional concerns, and challenges that may be affecting their sense of well-being. Mr. Zhang encourages clients to explore their thoughts and experiences with curiosity, develop greater self-awareness, and consider possibilities for positive change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is warm, collaborative, and culturally responsive. I want you to feel heard and understood before we try to change anything. I work with people dealing with anxiety, ADHD, life transitions, family dynamics, and the stress of living. I often draw on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you notice the thoughts and patterns that keep you stuck, and to build practical skills you can use outside of session. We will always fit the approach to you and your background, not the other way around. There's no pressure to have it all figured out during our first session. From there, we will go at a pace that feels right for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Initial sessions: We will talk about what’s brought you in, your background, your experiences and what you’d like to be different. I will take this time to understand your personal and therapeutic goals and assess your mental health needs. Getting clear on goals: As we develop a therapeutic relationship together, we will set a few goals that matter to you, whether that is feeling less anxious, handling a big life change, or improving family relationships. Ongoing sessions: We will meet regularly, usually weekly at the start. We will use CBT and other tools to understand your patterns and practice skills you can use between sessions. I always take your culture, family and values into account, and I can work in English or Mandarin. Checking in: Every so often, we will step back and look at how things are going and whether we need to adjust the plan. Therapy should fit you, so I welcome your feedback along the way.
