Getting to know Yongying (Kelly) Qiu

I have a particular interest in supporting women, Asian and immigrant clients, as well as individuals who have experienced trauma within relationships or families. * Please be advised that Kelly has a provisional license as a psychotherapist with the title of Mental Health Counselor – Limited Permit and works under the supervision of Katarzyna Dlugosz, LMHC-D as an employee of KDMHC.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Before becoming a therapist, I worked as an advocate for survivors of gender-based violence, including domestic and sexual violence. This experience shaped how I understand trauma and the ways it can affect how we see ourselves, relate to others, and move through the world. In my previous work as a therapist, I also worked closely with women and Asian immigrant clients. Having grown up in China and lived in New York as an international student since 2019, I bring both professional and personal understanding of what it can feel like to live between cultures, navigate family expectations, and make sense of different ideas about who you are “supposed” to be. I also bring a feminist perspective to therapy when it aligns with your values and experiences. I earned my Ed.M. in Mental Health Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I believe healing happens within a supportive and trusting relationship, and that is the foundation I build with every client. I take an integrative approach, drawing from different modalities based on each client’s unique needs. I recognize how past painful experiences may continue to affect individuals and work with them in a way that prioritizes safety and respect. Together, we explore how life experiences—such as trauma, relationships, family, and culture—shape thoughts, emotions, and current challenges. In session, I help clients deepen awareness of their patterns, explore new coping strategies and self-care techniques, and reconnect with their body and feelings. Over time, clients can begin to let go of what no longer serves them and move toward a life that aligns with their values and goals.
