“I saw Yuen for about 2 years and she helped me sort out a lot of my relationship anxiety and some confusion about my identity around my sexuality and my ethnicity. She really knows how to help you make sense of bad negative patterns of behavior so I was able to make some real changes. I didn't want to go to someone who focused only on insight, and Yuen takes a more active role than your average therapist. I would highly recommend her. She is trustworthy and warm, but she doesn't beat around the bush. ”

Getting to know Yuen Chan

I am a bi-racial, bi-cultural therapist with an office in Nomad, near Koreatown, where I see adults, couples, business partners, adolescents, and parents. If we decide to work together, we will partner to explore your inner life and uncover what is painful or difficult for you. I provide a warm, collaborative, and playful spirit within the therapeutic encounter, welcoming thoughts big and small, important and seemingly mundane, as pieces of the puzzle that make up your inner psychic life. Attentive listening, active dialogue, radical curiosity, and detailed inquiry are the cornerstones of my practice. I believe in tangible results and that action is as important as insight-one without the other often doesn't produce the outcomes we hope to see. It is through insight that we develop the courage to take action, and through action and lived experience that we can deepen our insight and self-awareness. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York, which informs my approach and commitment to thoughtful, evidence-based care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Welcome! I hope you feel good about taking the first step in reaching out, which is often the biggest hurdle to overcome. I understand this often comes with substantial anxiety about how this process can or will work, so I look forward to easing your mind once we meet. Many people feel sharp relief even after one session and I want to hear and learn about you and the challenges or difficulties you are facing. My experience as a therapist is filtered through the experience of being a bi-racial, cisgender woman, but I also think deeply about attachments to early caregivers, trauma, and relational patterns that often keep us stuck. I strike a good balance of empathy and warmth but I believe strongly in being honest and direct in order to advance the client’s potential. Often that comes in the form of encouraging action by facing our fears, and developing a client’s capacity to tolerate and metabolize frustration and pain through the safety of the therapeutic space.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The cadence is weekly or bi-weekly sessions in which we explore current problems - both big and small - that are interfering in your capacity to live the life of your choosing. Through the here-and-now of everyday problems we will weave back into the past in order to try to make sense of entrenched patterns of thinking and chronic, automatic ways of reacting to triggering events in order to excavate a more liberated and spontaneous existence. This is emotionally-challenging difficult work and sometimes you have to feel worse before you feel better, but therapy is the "gym for the mind" and the more you practice the stronger and more adaptable your thinking will be, and the greater your capacity to take risks and tolerate uncertainty. I pay close attention to active symptoms (anxiety, fears, paranoid thoughts, tics, sexual dysfunctions, toxic traits, etc) and we will use talk therapy, behavioral interventions, and insight in order to alleviate them. My approach is to actively participate in sessions, bringing to awareness chronic, destructive patterns of thinking and/or relating. We will creatively use all forms of your interactions with the world-at-large including but not limited to: work, friends, pop culture, movies, art, music, family, fantasies, and romantic / intimate relationships, all of which help us uncover and investigate your internal world so that you may live a more full, authentic life.
