Getting to know Yuriko Kyono

Do you have difficulty connecting with the people most important to you? Do you find yourself feeling stuck, unable to communicate your needs, wondering what the future will bring? For many, loneliness, lack of support, or instability in a relationship can be a source of stress, anxiety, and depression. Therapy is a place where you can shed light on who you are as a person, recognize what holds you back, and understand what can be done to help you move forward. It is an opportunity to learn how to be present in your important relationships and make choices from a place of confidence and clarity. I hold an MSEd in Mental Health Counseling from Hunter College, City University of New York, which informs my compassionate and insightful approach to supporting you on this journey.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Hunter College and completed my clinical internship at the Training Institute of Mental Health, where I worked with artists and creatives from diverse backgrounds. I am originally from Japan and have lived in the U.S. for the past 25 years. Music is a passion of mine. Having years of training in piano, I recognize the importance of self-expression, imagination, and creativity. These traits are transformative in therapy as well, allowing you to make connections between thoughts, emotions, and behavior, and understand how events in the past can remain ever-present, if just out of sight. I invite you to tell your stories and reflect on how they continue to shape your relationship with yourself and the world you live in.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach is psychodynamically informed, which means that change comes from being aware of what has made you who you are as an individual. We will explore your past experiences to understand how they continue to shape your present. My therapeutic space is collaborative, creative, and insight-oriented. I am curious about you and invite you to be curious about yourself! I believe that therapy sessions should be tailored to the unique needs of the client, so I welcome your input as we learn what works best for you. I offer individual psychotherapy to adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, life transitions, multicultural identity issues, and parenting. My goal is to create a safe and inclusive space for people of diverse backgrounds and experience.
