Psychotherapist
2 W 46th St, Ste 900, New York, NY
Hi, I am Sandy! I provide therapy in both English and Mandarin, and my own experiences navigating different cultures have shaped the way I understand identity, belonging, and the many contexts that influence how we move through the world. I often work with adults, particularly BIPOC clients, and welcome adolescents who may be navigating questions of identity, relationships, or life transitions. I value creating a space where different backgrounds and lived experiences can be valued and explored openly. I see symptoms not simply as problems to eliminate, but often as ways we have learned to cope with what has happened to us, what is happening around us, and what we fear or expect may happen next. These patterns may have once helped us survive and protect ourselves, even when they may no longer serve us in the same way today. In therapy, I hope to understand you not only through your personal experiences, but also from the cultural and systemic contexts that influence your life. Our work together is collaborative and grounded in curiosity, compassion, and respect for your pace. We might spend time noticing patterns, making sense of emotions, exploring relationships, or building on strengths and coping skills. Change does not have to happen all at once, and there may be challenging moments along the way, but you do not have to navigate them alone. My approach is flexible and integrative, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness, and psychodynamic therapy depending on what feels most useful for you. * Sandy has a provisional license as a psychotherapist with the title of Mental Health Counselor – Limited Permit and works under the supervision of Rogue Rodriguez, LMHC-D as an employee of KDMHC.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy with me is collaborative, nonjudgmental, and paced around where you are. I do not see you as a set of symptoms to fix. Instead, I am interested in understanding how your experiences, relationships, identities, culture, and environment have shaped the ways you cope and move through the world. I value curiosity, honesty, and compassion in the therapeutic relationship. I may gently invite you to notice patterns, emotions, or ways of relating that feel important, while also respecting your readiness for change. My goal is to help you feel more connected to yourself, build on your existing strengths, and move toward a life that feels more authentic and meaningful to you. During this process, there might be challenging moments, but you won’t have to do it alone.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I usually begin by getting to know what brings you to therapy, what has been happening in your life, and what you hope may feel different over time. I also want to understand the broader context of your experiences. From there, we work together to identify patterns, emotions, coping strategies, and areas you would like to explore or change. Depending on your needs, I may draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness, somatic approaches, and psychodynamic therapy. I do not follow a rigid formula. Our work may include developing practical coping skills, increasing emotional awareness, exploring past and current relationship patterns, or making space for experiences that have been difficult to understand or express. We will continue to check in about what feels helpful and adjust the work as your needs and goals evolve.
