“Zena has been my go to for several years now so i am in a good position to review her as a therapist. Zena is the type of therapist that always brings her best for her patients. She really cares, and it comes through in each session. For example, she had been helping me worth through anxiety and some hair picking safter moving to Chicago for a new job. Zena helped me chill enough to check myself with daily habits. I highly recommend her for therapy. ”

Getting to know Zena Ramsey

Welcome! My name is Zena and I am a therapist at Mentella Health. I specialize in working with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, grief and loss, relationship conflicts, relational trauma (experiences where your needs for safety, understanding, connection were not met), and difficulty adjusting to changes. My experience includes a Master of Arts in Counseling and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and over six years working as a Mental Health Therapist in various outpatient settings.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Grounded in humanistic theory, I’ll meet you with curiosity, open-mindedness, empathy, and respect, while incorporating different therapeutic modalities depending on your unique needs (e.g. Client-Centered/Humanistic, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion-Focused, Psychodynamic). Therapy isn't about 'fixing' you - because you are not broken. It is about understanding, connection, building resilience, and creating meaning. I take a non-pathologizing approach to help you understand how your symptoms and emotional responses make sense within the context of your history, relationships, and unmet needs. My approach balances self-acceptance and change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I’ll provide a balance of validation and challenge to help you untangle complex emotional, relational, and behavioral patterns that have kept you stuck in a cycle of depression, chronic shame/anxiety, avoidance, perfectionism, and/or people-pleasing. Together we will slow down and explore these patterns in the present moment as well as explore how your inner dialog might be impacting you to help you move toward a more compassionate understanding of yourself. As we start to bring curiosity and compassion to your inner dialogue and emotional responses, you can begin to relate to yourself differently, rather than getting caught in automatic reactions. Over time, this work leads to feeling less overwhelmed by emotions, less shame and self-criticism, and more flexibility in how you respond to yourself and others. Additionally, we will explore what really matters to you - your values, your wants and needs, and what gives your life purpose and meaning so that change isn’t just about your internal experiences, it's also about living more fully in alignment with who you really are.
