Twice now Dr. Slaughter has worked with me to overcome two major back-to-back life stressors that felt almost impossible to overcome alone. Both times he has talked me through my worries and anxieties, without being overly-prescriptive in offering his own personal advice. Rather, he works collaboratively with me at a pace I'm comfortable with, and it is a breeze to get in touch with his secretary via text. He's the paragon of what modern psychiatry should be.

My experience with Dr. Nikiforov has been excellent thus far. I have always been apprehensive about seeing a psychiatrist and tend to feel uncomfortable in discussing the symptoms I was facing so I was nervous in approaching the appointment. Dr. Nikiforov is very personable and put me at ease during my appointment. He listened very carefully and was extremely thorough in considering my symptoms and the right type of treatment for me. Additionally, he is extremely easy to reach and very responsive. I always feel like I can reach out and get a helpful and quick response if I have questions or issues with my treatment. He also was very helpful in working with me on submitting claims to my insurance. I have since been seeing him for follow ups and plan to continue to use his practice.

It took a few doctors before I found Dr. Huan, and I’m extremely thankful to have found such an amazing doctor. I was having fairly disruptive anxiety attacks and Dr. Huan was able to use a variety of techniques to help me deal with my issues. She listens intently, asks thoughtful questions, and facilitates a very constructive process to conquer anything you may wish to overcome. After a few months, I feel fantastic and attribute this success entirely to Dr. Huan. I couldn’t possibly recommend her enough. I highly suggest that anyone looking to contact Dr. Huan and start sessions right away!

This is first time I paid out of pocket for any doctor. Her consultation fee was high but most psychiatric appointments are anyway. Although Dr. Answer and I had a miscommunication regarding where to send my script to and she came off a little rude and short tempered on the phone, she was still an excellent psychiatrist who diagnosed me spot on with only one consult. In fact, she picked up on things I never even noticed nor my previous psychiatrist noticed. With that said, I would definitely recommend her to anyone else.

Dr. Hong is an excellent psychiatrist who was highly recommended by her colleagues at NYU Langone. She is compassionate and was right on point with her assessment. During the visit, she was very patient and listened to my history. She utilizes both psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. She also asked many insightful questions to help me begin to uunderstand my diagnosis.

When to see a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is trained to diagnose, treat and prevent mental health illnesses. They handle all kinds of mental health issues ranging from panic attacks, hallucinations and suicidal tendencies to disorders like depression, anxiety and bipolar disorders. A combination of medical tests, psychological assessments and patient interaction is used to understand and diagnose.

Psychiatrists can recommend the following treatment methods based on the patient’s needs:

  • Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, uses dialogue with patients as a tool to eliminate or control any disabling or troubling symptoms. You can find more information on psychotherapy in the American Psychiatric Association’s website.
  • Medications, where required, to help with stabilizing brain chemistry.
  • Psychosocial intervention is used to transform an individual’s behavior and emotional state. The purpose is to guide the patient into having healthy relationships with the society using nonmedicinal means.
  • Electroconvulsive therapy to treat severe psychosis that accompanies detachment from reality.

Psychiatrist vs. Psychologist

To qualify as a psychiatrist, a person must obtain a medical degree with specialized training in psychiatry. On the other hand, a psychologist has an advanced degree—commonly in clinical psychology—and has experience in research and clinical practice. Psychiatrists, being medical doctors, can prescribe medications in addition to psychotherapy. Psychologists primarily use psychotherapy as their treatment methods. However, some might train in psychological testing and evaluation. Read “Which Type of Therapist Do You Need?” from Zocdoc’s patient blog “The Paper Gown” for more information.
