Who is a psychotherapist?

Psychotherapist is an umbrella term that incorporates all mental health providers, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, and social workers. Psychotherapists use talk therapy to treat emotional troubles and mental health conditions in people of all ages. Some may be qualified to prescribe medications as well. They conduct therapy sessions in different formats—individual, couple, family, and group—depending on the issues and needs of the patients.

Psychotherapists can treat mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, addictions, eating disorders, personality disorders, and schizophrenia. However, their role is not limited to that; they also help people cope with emotional problems at different life stages. It could be related to work, relationships, chronic health issues, and other factors—for instance, the death of a loved one, divorce, failure at work, mental trauma from physical abuse, domestic violence, bullying, and insomnia.

Psychotherapy aims to provide people with a safe space to express themselves without hesitation. Therapists use different psychotherapy techniques to help them meet patients' mental health goals. These positive changes thus improve their overall quality of life. Since therapy is often long-term, specialists ensure they build trusted and positive relationships with clients.

What are the warning signs of emotional distress and mental illness?

It is a good idea to check your emotional and mental health occasionally. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms from the comprehensive list given below, you must immediately seek help from a psychotherapist near you:

  • Worsening sleep patterns such as insomnia or oversleeping
  • Frequent episodes of irritability, anger, frustration, and sadness
  • Bouts of mental breakdown
  • Loss of interest in hobbies and interests you used to enjoy
  • Change in eating patterns such as loss of appetite or binge eating
  • Experiencing unexplained physical symptoms such as frequent headaches, weight loss, or dizziness
  • Low performance at school, work, and other activities
  • Having low energy levels at most times
  • Withdrawal from social engagements
  • Ignoring personal care such as hygiene and grooming
  • Resorting to unhealthy coping habits such as drugs, alcohol, and casual sex
  • Declining sex drive
  • Suicidal thoughts

What to expect during psychotherapy sessions?

Generally, therapy sessions happen every 1-2 weeks and last 45 minutes to an hour. Your treatment period will be decided based on the severity of your problems, personal needs, therapy techniques used by your psychotherapist, and other factors. Make sure you are well-prepared for your first therapy session. It will help to know why you opted for therapy and your expectations.

The psychotherapist will understand your background, experiences, problems, and needs during your first session. They may also evaluate your overall health using a simple questionnaire on your past and present physical and emotional symptoms. Remember that therapy is often not a quick process, so the specialist may take a few sessions to understand your situation and decide on a treatment approach.

In the later sessions, they will encourage you to talk about your feelings and thoughts. It may not be easy to talk about everything at once. However, with every new session, you may feel confident and develop more trust. So, there is no need to rush—you can reveal details at your own pace and comfort. Sometimes, these intense discussions may cause an emotional or angry outburst during the sessions, which is normal. Your therapist will help you through them.

As the sessions progress, they will formulate goals for the treatment with you and guide you through different coping strategies to meet them. You may also get homework combining various activities or practices between the sessions.

Questions to ask the psychotherapist during your first therapy session

The first therapy session allows you to get to know your psychotherapist and determine if they are the right fit for you. You can do so by asking the provider relevant questions. It is a good idea to take enough time before the visit and jot everything down in your journal or smartphone. Do you need ideas? Consider adding the below-mentioned questions to your list:

Questions about the psychotherapist's background

  • What is your education and training level?
  • Do you hold any certifications?
  • Do you have a practice license?
  • How much experience do you have practicing as a therapist?
  • What is your expertise? Have you worked with patients with similar issues as mine?

Questions about psychotherapy sessions

  • How long is each therapy session?
  • How often will I see you?
  • What can I expect during the therapy sessions?
  • How should I prepare for the therapy sessions?
  • Do you provide both in-person and virtual care?

Questions about the psychotherapy approach

  • What type of therapies do you use?
  • What is the best treatment plan for me?
  • How long can I expect to be in therapy? When will I see my desired outcomes?
  • What are your ways to monitor progress
  • What happens if I don't see positive results?

What are the different types of psychotherapy?

Your therapist will decide a therapy approach based on your unique situation, goals, and needs. They may use one or more psychotherapy techniques to help you overcome your problems and attain overall well-being. Following are some of the most common approaches a psychotherapist near you may employ:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): This technique helps identify unhealthy thinking patterns, behaviors, and beliefs and teaches self-help strategies to facilitate positive changes. It is helpful for people with anxiety and depression.
  • Dialectical behavior therapy: A type of CBT, this therapeutic intervention focuses on understanding and managing emotions. It is particularly effective for treating suicidal behavior, borderline personality disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Acceptance & commitment therapy: As the name implies, this form of psychotherapy helps you accept your troublesome thoughts, feelings, emotions, and situations. It also makes you commit to your goals and work towards achieving them.
  • Psychodynamic therapy and psychoanalysis: Centers on unraveling the unconscious mind and how it influences current behaviors and patterns. After gaining awareness, you will focus on changing them.
  • Interpersonal psychotherapy: It is a short-term therapy that focuses on improving one's relationships with others, including family, friends, and colleagues.

How do you get the most out of psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a slow process, and it is easy to lose hope midway. However, remember to believe in the expert and their approach and continue your treatment diligently. Here are some tips to follow to make the most of psychotherapy:

  • Evaluate your comfort with the specialist at regular intervals.
  • Trust your psychotherapist and create a partnership with them.
  • Be open and honest about your problems, feelings, and thoughts.
  • Adhere to your treatment plan, attend every session, and do homework.
  • Remember your goals and focus on achieving them.
  • Be patient throughout the process, and do not expect immediate results.
  • Acknowledge your progress from time to time.
  • If the therapy is not helping, talk to your therapist.

How to take care of your mental health?

Before scheduling an appointment with a virtual psychotherapist, you can try to be mindful of your mental well-being and prevent any extreme breakdowns. Here are some steps you can take to care for your mental health:

  • Confiding in someone you trust during tough times is beneficial, whether a friend, family member, or colleague. Sharing your feelings with someone who cares for you can provide comfort and support. Even if you can't meet in person, staying connected through video calls, phone calls, or messaging apps can still offer valuable emotional support.
  • Prioritizing your physical health is essential for enhancing your overall mental well-being. Exercise for at least 30 minutes daily, whether jogging, walking, practicing yoga, dancing, cycling, or tending to your garden. Maintain a balanced and nutritious diet, and get enough restorative sleep each night.
  • Try to do things that bring you happiness and fulfillment. Whether cooking for yourself or loved ones, spending time with your pet, taking leisurely walks in the park, diving into a good book, or enjoying a film or TV series, prioritize activities that resonate with you. Establishing a routine filled with enjoyable pursuits can contribute significantly to your mental well-being.
  • Avoid turning to harmful substances like drugs, alcohol, kava, or tobacco as a means to cope with your emotions. While they might offer temporary relief, relying on them can exacerbate your long-term well-being. Additionally, these substances pose serious health risks and can risk your safety and the well-being of those around you.
  • To alleviate the burden of persistent swirling thoughts, center yourself in the present moment. Try to take three slow, deep breaths and ask yourself: What are five things I can see? What are four things I can hear? What can I smell? What sensations do I experience underneath my fingertips? This practice can help ground you in the present and ease the overwhelming swirl of thoughts.
