Getting to know Jennifer Waterman

Hello and welcome. I’m Jennifer Waterman, LCSW, and I’m grateful you’re here. I believe therapy is a place where people can reconnect with their strengths, uncover new perspectives and find meaningful paths forward. My work is grounded in warmth, compassion and respect for the unique experiences each person brings. I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals navigating life transitions, relationship concerns, stress, anxiety, trauma and moments of feeling stuck for nearly 20 years. My focus is on helping you feel more grounded, more empowered and more connected to yourself. I provide one-on-one therapy for adults (18+) throughout Illinois. I have a special clinical interest empowering women and mothers navigating stressors--but I also welcome men seeking individual therapy, if you feel my style aligns with your goals. Choosing to begin therapy is an act of courage. I would be honored to walk with you as you explore your story, heal what feels heavy and move toward a more balanced and fulfilling life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting therapy can feel intimidating, so I want you to know that our work together will always be guided by warmth, safety and genuine collaboration. You can expect a space where your feelings and experiences are met with curiosity, not judgment, and where your voice shapes the direction of our sessions. My style is steady, present and compassionate. I listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions and invite you to explore both your challenges and your strengths. While I use evidence-based approaches, I tailor each session to what you need in the moment—whether that’s deeper reflection, learning new skills or simply having a safe place to land. I move at your pace. I won’t push you into anything you’re not ready for, but I will gently support you in understanding yourself more fully and developing new ways of coping and growing. My hope is that you leave sessions feeling heard, understood and empowered.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work begins with a conversation. In the first session, we’ll talk about what brings you to therapy, what you hope to change or understand and any questions or concerns you may have. This helps us create a plan that feels right for you. Ongoing sessions usually start with a check-in about how you’ve been feeling. From there, we explore whatever is most present—emotions, patterns, stressors or relationships. Some sessions may focus on insight and deeper understanding; others may center on practical tools or building new skills. Both are valuable, and the pace is always guided by your comfort. I strive to create a calm, supportive space where you can reflect, breathe and feel safe being yourself. Throughout our work, I’ll ask for feedback about how therapy is going so we can adjust our approach as needed. My goal is for each session to offer clarity, relief and steady progress toward the life you want.
