Dr. Areej Hashmi, DO

Primary Care Doctor
19485 Old Jetton Rd, Ste 100, Cornelius, NC
Since I grew up being around my parents' primary care clinic, I saw how much they enjoyed caring for patients and how much patients grew to rely on them. Our childhood home was filled with small tokens of appreciation from my parents' patients, which made me realize what a privilege it is for someone to entrust their health to you. I wanted to be part of a profession that allowed me to have an impact on people's lives. Family medicine seemed to me the clear choice, especially because of my interest in preventive medicine. I talk to my patients about how they can incorporate small changes and routines into their daily lives to try to minimize, or even eliminate, the risk of chronic conditions becoming debilitating. Active listening and good communication are foundational to a trusting relationship between physician and patient. I try to ensure my patients feel heard, understood and appreciated at every visit. As an osteopathic physician, I consider how external factors, such as the environment, affect our physical and mental health. I discuss with patients how lifestyle choices can have as big an impact on their health as medication. My parents are from Pakistan, and I speak Urdu fluently - something I work hard at maintaining. My husband and I both love hiking, and we've covered most of the trails in and around Asheville. My hobbies include reading, baking, cooking and traveling. I'm an animal lover and look forward to being a "cat mom" one day. Since I can't expect patients to develop healthy habits if I don't have them myself, I'm passionate about taking care of my body and mind. I walk every day while listening to an audiobook or a podcast.
