As a child growing up in a small town in Puerto Rico, access to healthcare was challenging at times. I saw firsthand how the tragedy of natural disasters and the shortage of physicians caused preventable health complications, and how primary care was the best way to address this. When I was a teenager, I became a caregiver for chronically ill family members, and unfortunately lost a few family members to chronic disease. Feeling the satisfaction of caring for others, and seeing the results when care is unavailable, led me to choose family medicine as my specialty. It remains my goal to increase access to healthcare, and provide compassionate, culturally sensitive care to each patient. I want my patients to feel empowered through education. I strive to take the time each patient needs to ask questions and to understand treatment options. I believe healthcare is a partnership and stronger partnerships lead to better outcomes. I work to build long-lasting relationships because I have seen the value those relationships can have. My parents were teachers, leading me to develop a passion for education. I now work to educate other medical providers. My father, a music teacher, taught me to play the flute. I still love the world of performing arts and often enjoy musicals, theater shows and concerts across Charlotte. My Puerto Rican roots shine through in my love of social gatherings, especially family gatherings. My husband and I are big fans of travel, and like to explore our country as well as other countries around the world, especially when we can experience other cultures and learn from different people.
