Getting to know Dr. Jonathan Weingarden

Dr. Weingarden is the founder / owner of Weingarden Psychological Services practice group. While Dr. Weingarden sees clients, most new appointments will be scheduled with one of his colleagues. Some of the available times shown are for other therapists - when you click on the availability, Zocdoc will display the name of the therapist before you schedule the appointment. I am a Pittsburgher and proud to practice psychology in my home community, supporting other therapists in my practice group by providing supervision and fostering a supportive workplace. I earned my PsyD in Counseling Psychology from Chatham University, which has shaped my approach to individualized healthcare. My goal is to see each client as a person first and to provide care tailored to their unique needs. I view therapy as a collaborative process that includes both skill-building and self-exploration. In self-exploration, I see the client as the expert in their own life, while the therapist remains attuned to noticing themes or patterns the client might have otherwise missed or avoided. Dr. Weingarden founded Weingarden Psychological Services and provides clinical supervision to some of the WPS clinicians, as well as to outside providers.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Integrative therapy with a person-first focus - we need to understand the individual within a social context, and this guides skill building and interventions. A relational psychodynamic lens provides a perspective to under stand the person in depth, combined with IFS, how they relate to themselves, and how they relate to others including to me in therapy. Dr. Weingarden is currently primarily offering limited availability for self-pay clients ($250/hr). In addition to the depth-psychology described above, areas of specialization include: - Bipolar Disoder: IPSRT (Intpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy) skills training for self-management of bipolar symptoms, and family-member support. - Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills therapy - Clinical supervision for mental health professionals ($150/hr), both as clinicians contracted with WPS or outside of the practice (longer term depth therapy, or brief skills training) - Consultation: business consultation for management skills, creating healthy cultures, and specific skills for mental health treatment facilities - Lectures: training for staff at mental health treatment facilities (such as on therapy skills or behavioral management and positive approaches for crisis de-escalation), or academic lectures on therapeutic skills and theoretical orientations

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The most important thing in selecting a therapist is your ability to connect with that person. I always suggest people call a few therapists and trust their gut to pick the right one. Feel free to reach out for a brief, free consultation, and we can discuss whether we'd be a good fit for each other. If we are a good fit, we jump into therapy quickly - as therapy focuses on how we relate, exploring how we relate is both rapport-building and therapeutic in terms of understanding what is coming up between us consciously and verbally. We develop a conceptualization of your internal system, interpersonal functioning and how these generate symptoms, then explore alternatives which results in greater free will and self-actualization. If appropriate, integrating coping skills or more directive interventions. Finally is maintenance in which we continue to monitor the patterns as they change and a new system of self-management and interpersonal functioning solidifies.
