About Dr. Naomi Akita
Dr. Akita grew up in Hawaii where she has been in practice for over 18 years. In 1991, she was the Valedictorian of her high school and visited Atlanta as a recipient of the Coca-Cola scholarship.
She graduated magna cum laude from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri with a double major in biology and psychology and minor in Japanese studies. She was chosen to participate in a Washington University exchange program at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland where she received her MD degree and BAO degree in Obstetrics.
She did her internship in Philadelphia and residency at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. She is board certified in Ob/Gyn with a passion for obstetrics and keen interest in minimally invasive surgery. She is excited to relocate to Atlanta to live near family with her husband, Kamal, who is an Oncologist with Georgia Cancer Specialists, and their five year old son, Kamran. She is fluent in conversational Japanese.
Dr. Akita's approach to women's healthcare is to manage problems as thoroughly and conservatively as possible by first educating the patient. Next, she performs a thorough history and physical examination and orders the proper diagnostic tests. Treatment options are proposed and the patient makes her own decision regarding treatment with guidance. If surgery is necessary, she attempts to be as minimally invasive as possible. Much of her gynecologic surgery is done laparoscopically, which includes total laparoscopic hysterectomies, laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomies, removal of endometriosis, ovarian cyst removal and ectopic pregnancies. Another minimally invasive operative procedure she routinely performs is endometrial ablation and hysteroscopy. This procedure offers an alternative to hysterectomy for treatment of abnormal and excessive uterine bleeding not stemming from uterine cancer. The procedure is safe and effective and is performed in the office.
