Dr. Natalia Potapova’s professional journey represents a series of impressive accomplishments. In 1997 she graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Russian State Medical University, having received a Moscow Government Scholarship for all six years of study. Shortly after she was accepted to an ophthalmology residency at Moscow’s renowned and highly selective Eye Microsurgery Institute, headed by Sv. Fyodorov. She completed this residency in 1999 and immediately started practicing ophthalmology in Moscow. After deciding to move to the United States to further her professional career, Dr. Potapova was accepted into a preliminary internal medicine internship at St. Raphael Hospital at Yale School of Medicine which she completed in 2005. Dr. Potapova then received a clinical fellowship at the NIH, National Eye Institute in Bethesda, MD, with Dr. Nussenblatt and Dr. Clarke, where she worked from 2005 until 2006. After a challenging selection process, Dr. Potapova was chosen for her ophthalmology residency at Louisiana State University’s Shreveport Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology. She completed this program in 2009. This program is ranked as one of the top ten programs in the country in regards to surgical cases performed by the residents. Dr. Potapova’s in-service exams during her residency were rated in the 90th percentile or higher among other ophthalmology residents across the U.S.

Very caring doctor and great bedside manner. Explained everything about my diagnosed condition and suggested a treatment protocol that didn’t entail prescriptions right off the bat. Only gripe is receptionist was very aloof and didn’t give any updates on what insurance said after calling to verify my benefits (had to ask) or how long until provider would be available to see me. She could use a little bedside manner.

She was thorough. With that said, she dialated my eyes without telling me or warning me I would be unable to see for hours (have never had that done). I had to go back to my office after the appointment and could barely make it back and was unable to read anything, see my computer, dial a phone- nothing! I had a meeting with top executives at my company and couldn’t even function because I couldn’t stand the light in the room or read anything I had prepared! I actually cannot believe that happened and find it completely unacceptable.
Dr. Potapova was very professional, nice and efficient. Good bedside manner, and she was very thorough with my eye screening. Office was pleasant and clean, and the location was good. The only downside was that the wait was an hour beyond my appointment time, though I think that is not unique -- it happens in most NYC medical offices after 1 PM if they accept any insurance and aren't super boutique/exclusive. Since it was later in the day, I would have appreciated a call in advance if they knew they were running that late, so I could have avoided running out of work for no reason (my hair salon can manage this for 15 minutes or more, not sure why doctors can't?). The receptionist was brusque but polite.
Dr. Potapova listened patiently as I explained my issues and answered all my questions. Highly recommend her, as I have seen many doctors over the last few months and have found many of them to be rushed and dismissive!

She was wonderful. I just moved to New York and had to find an opthamologist and was very happy with my first visit. She was extremely thorough and checked under my eyelids which I’ve never had an eye doctor do. She explained the procedures and the findings of the test in a way that was way to understand but also what risks I had so I know what to look for in my next exam. Highly recommend her.
