COPD, or Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a severe lung condition, is a significant cause of disability in the United States. Around 15.7 million US adults have COPD. In New York, nearly 900,000 adults have doctor-diagnosed COPD.  


People in New York are more prone to disabilities caused by chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease. Almost 27% of adults in New York State have one or more disabilities. According to the New York State Education Department, as of 2024, 1,372 physical therapists are actively practicing in New York City.
