Alexandra Bennett, LCSW

Psychotherapist
1651 3rd Avenue, #205, New York, NY
I am a licensed psychotherapist based in New York, working with children, adolescents, and young adults. My areas of expertise include anxiety, OCD, athlete mental health, and ADHD. I use a cognitive-behavioral approach to help clients identify and adapt negative thought patterns to facilitate meaningful change. I am trained in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD and SPACE treatment. I am a CBT-based therapist, meaning I focus on helping clients recognize and change unhelpful thinking and behavior patterns, while also drawing on other evidence-based approaches such as DBT and play therapy when appropriate. In addition to my private practice, I serve as the lower school counselor at the Windward School, where I work with children with language-based learning disabilities.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I provide a warm trusting environment for clients to feel both supported and challenged in sessions. In the first few sessions, we work together to identify goals. For younger clients, I utilize play-based therapy approaches to supplement talk therapy. I collaborate closely with schools and other providers to ensure support across settings. Additionally, I work with families to assist in parent coaching and developing skills to support their children at home.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The intake session is 60 minutes and provides an opportunity to gather a detailed history and begin setting goals for our work together. For minor clients, there are two separate intake sessions—one with the child and one with the parents or guardians. Ongoing sessions are 45 minutes each. Between sessions, I may assign homework, typically focused on practicing the skills learned during our time together.
