Amber Cruse, MSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I work with women navigating anxiety, trauma, self-doubt, relationship and intimacy concerns, career challenges, and grief and loss. Many of the women I work with find themselves overfunctioning, people-pleasing, avoiding what they really want, shrinking themselves, or second-guessing their decisions. They may struggle with perfectionism, feel like they always have to be strong, or carry a deep sense that they are never quite enough. I’m especially passionate about working with women who are ready to understand the patterns that keep them feeling stuck - whether that shows up in relationships, intimacy, career, boundaries, or the way they relate to themselves. I work with women who want to feel more confident in who they are, become more comfortable with vulnerability, develop healthier relationships, and stop abandoning themselves in order to feel loved, accepted, or safe. I also work with women who have experienced trauma and are trying to understand how those experiences continue to affect their relationships, sense of safety, self-worth, and ability to let others in. We can make space for both the parts of you that have learned to protect yourself and the parts that still want connection, love, creativity, and a fuller life. I believe that healing involves both understanding where our patterns come from and creating space to discover who we are beyond them. My work is grounded in the belief that self-discovery happens through connection, curiosity, and the willingness to be seen honestly. I want therapy to be a place where you can become more connected to your own voice, desires, values, and sense of self. I don’t see therapy as a process of fixing what is wrong with you. I see it as an opportunity to understand yourself more deeply, honor what you have lived through, and create room for new possibilities.

I work with women who want to feel more confident in who they are, become more comfortable with vulnerability, develop healthier relationships, and stop abandoning themselves in order to feel loved, accepted, or safe. My work is grounded in the belief that self-discovery happens through connection, curiosity, and the willingness to be seen honestly. I want therapy to be a place where you can become more connected to your own voice, desires, values, and sense of self. I don’t see therapy as a process of fixing what is wrong with you. What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is relational. I believe healing can happen within the experience of a safe, trusting relationship where you can feel fully seen, witnessed, and supported in making sense of what you’ve lived through. Rather than seeing you as a diagnosis or a collection of symptoms to fix, I’m interested in understanding your experiences - what has happened to you, how you’ve learned to navigate the world, and what has shaped the way you see yourself. Our families, cultures, relationships, and larger social systems all influence who we become and the beliefs we carry. At times, what feels like an internal struggle may be connected to external pressures, expectations, or experiences that we have learned to internalize. Part of our work together is creating space to explore these influences with curiosity, while also helping you reconnect with your own values, voice, and sense of self.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I take an integrative approach and may incorporate different therapeutic approaches and tools depending on what feels most supportive and relevant to you. My work draws from relational, psychodynamic, CBT, attachment-based, IFS, feminist, somatic, and creative expressive approaches. This might include exploring patterns in your thoughts and relationships, paying attention to what is happening in your body, working with different parts of yourself, or using creative expression to access and process experiences that may be difficult to put into words. Therapy is collaborative, and we’ll regularly check in about what feels useful and meaningful to you. The goal is not to follow a rigid formula, but to develop an approach that fits your needs and supports both deeper self-understanding and meaningful change.
