Getting to know Anita Aasen

Disclaimer: Providers at Canino Psychotherapy focus on therapy services and do not prescribe medication, as they are not psychiatrists. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 30 years of clinical experience and a Master's degree in Social Work from Fordham University. Throughout my career, I have worked with individuals and families across the lifespan, including children, adolescents, and adults, in a wide range of clinical and life circumstances. My therapeutic style is person-centered, collaborative, and grounded, with an emphasis on creating a space that feels safe, respectful, and nonjudgmental. I believe each person walks a unique path shaped by their experiences, relationships, losses, and strengths. Therapy can be a process of understanding patterns, uncovering meaning, and recognizing resilience. I am certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and have extensive training in grief and loss work. I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based practices to support emotional regulation, coping skills, and increased self-awareness, particularly during times of loss and life transitions. My areas of specialization include anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, grief, and low self-esteem. I work at a pace that respects each client's readiness and values, honoring both the pain people carry and the strength they often underestimate. Above all, I view therapy as a collaborative partnership, rooted in compassion, curiosity, and hope.

What should a new client know about working with you?

New clients often appreciate knowing that I approach therapy as a collaborative and respectful process, where your voice, pace, and goals matter. Our work together will be guided by openness, curiosity, and practical support, blending reflection with concrete tools you can use in daily life. You do not need to have everything figured out to begin—showing up as you are is enough. My role is to walk alongside you, help make sense of what feels overwhelming, and support you in building clarity, resilience, and meaningful change over time.
