Getting to know April Chapel

April Chapel is a licensed professional counselor specializing in trauma resolution and Christian mental health. She graduated summa cum laude from Troy University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and earned her Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in traumatology. April treats depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, trauma, relationship conflict, grief, anger, guilt, and stress. She uses cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy to help clients evaluate thoughts for truth and find acceptance for realities that are unlikely to change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is goal-oriented. Clients should know that I enjoy integrating spiritual principles into therapy. I accompany clients on the journey of healing from emotional distress using both proven therapy skills and spiritual interventions consistent with the Christian faith. Treatment goals are to identify sources of depression/anxiety, and find scriptural resolutions for emotional wounds. Are you open to exploring contributing factors, evaluating thoughts for truth, and finding acceptance for realities that are not likely to change? Would you like to grow in your knowledge of God’s grace and further realize your identity in Christ? If so, I may be a good fit for your counseling needs! My therapy is very goal-directed, and I assist clients in identifying and healing sources of emotional distress instead of managing symptoms. Clients should expect to do therapy work between sessions and commit to making positive change. At initial appointments, we will work on ways to create a healing environment while engaged in therapy, to secure time and space for developing therapy skills learned in sessions. I hope to provide a safe, therapeutic setting to work through mental health issues with compassion and grace.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Counseling sessions are conducted via video calls using a secure, Hippa-compliant platform. I can share my screen as we work together on counseling files, handouts, articles, written prayers, and videos that support counseling goals. A typical session begins with prayer (if you want it), to invite God's presence and wisdom into the therapy session. Sessions are generally once a week, and we discuss insight gleaned from assigned therapy work in subsequent sessions. As a trauma focused cognitive-behavioral therapist, I will be looking for messages from talk therapy that do not reflect God's truth so we can confront them and dispute unhealthy thinking styles with truth. I encourage clients to identify takeaways at the end of the session, to clarify areas that need focus.
