“I started talking to Austin when I was under a lot of stress and for reasons that were beyond my control. Personally for me, Austin proved to be a perfect sounding board. We talked about anything and everything under the sun. Slowly and after a few conversations, I realized that my mind was a lot lighter and I was feeling better. Austin also taught me some tricks to put my mind at ease whenever I would feel stressed about anything. Could not have asked for a better listener.”

Getting to know Austin Prock

I'm a therapist in New York City who works with women and men navigating anxiety, stress and burnout, depression, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and life transitions. Using an integrative approach, I help you understand why you think, feel, and act the way you do, whether that shows up as overthinking, people-pleasing, or feeling stuck, and then build practical tools that fit your life. Clients describe me as warm, grounding, and consistent. You set the pace, and nothing is off-limits or judged.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is person-centered, because every client has a unique story. I take seriously that you’re trusting me with what’s going on underneath the surface. As a trauma-informed therapist, I’m often able to help identify what someone is actually struggling with, even when it’s not what they expected to talk about. I’m kind and non-judgmental, but I won’t let you stay stuck just to keep things comfortable. If you have it together on paper but still feel off inside, I understand that, and I’ll be honest with you rather than let you perform your way through sessions. You don’t need to have it figured out before you start. That’s what I’m here to do with you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I start by mapping out what’s actually driving the pattern you’re dealing with. I help you trace where certain beliefs came from, and the experiences that shaped how you think, feel, and react now. Many clients have a moment of recognizing a story they’ve been living from without realizing it. From there, I ground the work in what’s happening in your nervous system. You’ll come to understand why you shut down, why you overachieve, why your body reacts the way it does, without judgment. Once you see that your system learned these responses, they tend to loosen. I also work with the parts of you that developed these patterns to protect you in the first place. I don’t try to shame or push past those parts. I meet them with curiosity, because they served a purpose once. I use evidence-based, nervous-system-focused techniques to help process the experiences behind these beliefs, not just talk about them. This is where the emotional charge tends to lift and the old belief starts to feel less true. Finally, I focus on applying that change in real life. Insight alone tends to fade once you’re back in your routine, so I stay with you as you practice new choices in real relationships and under real pressure, until the change actually holds.

Working with Austin was very helpful, he listened intently and asked important questions. He gave me space for my own thoughts to unfold while at the same time keeping me on track to what they were circling. He acted like a mirror - reflecting back a clearer understanding of my own feelings and thoughts.
