Daniel Hoffman, SW

Psychotherapist
PA
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in New York and Pennsylvania with seven years of experience working as a psychotherapist in both community and hospital settings. Before entering the field of social work, I worked as a writer and earned an advanced degree in literature. My interest in psychoanalysis, combined with a desire to serve the community, led me to pursue a career in social work. I work with adolescents and adults, with a particular focus on individuals experiencing severe mental illness and/or their family members. In addition to my private practice, I serve as the team leader and supervisor for the NYU Langone OnTrack program, a specialized service for young adults experiencing first episode psychosis. My primary training is in psychodynamic psychotherapy, and I also have a background in mentalization-based therapy (MBT)—an evidence-based approach developed for individuals with borderline personality disorder and/or trauma. Additionally, I have trained with the Wildflower Alliance, a radical, peer-led mental health organization based in Western Massachusetts. I write and present nationally on issues related to mental illness in community and hospital settings. My work has been published in Psychoanalytic Social Work, Mad in America, and the book Institutionalized Madness.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe the best therapy is a catalyst toward greater freedom and agency to lead life in a fulfilling and healthy way. My orientation is psychodynamic, which means I believe that the trouble often starts with parts of our experience that are out of consciousness. In therapy, I'll tune into your emotional world, and we’ll work together to build more awareness of these parts—including how they show up in the therapy itself—and to find new ways of coping with life’s challenges.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In treatment with me, clients can expect a calm and collaborative working alliance, sometimes with humor thrown in, where I draw on my years of experience in outpatient and inpatient hospital settings.
