Getting to know Deanna Gibson

Deanna Gibson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 10 years of experience in counseling, teaching, and advocacy for youth homelessness. She received her Master's in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago in 2013, with a focus on Children and Families. Deanna personalizes the counseling experience, using a combination of Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavior, and Narrative Therapy. She ensures that all services have a humanistic and holistic foundation. In 2022, she founded Rising Phoenix Counseling, PLLC to meet the growing need for mental health services in the Black community. If you are searching for the right therapist but have questions, reach out. We will discuss your needs, goals, and expectations for therapy. And if we're not the right fit, I will assist in connecting you with someone who may be because I'm committed to helping others grow.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Many people think that therapy is simply a place to vent about life’s problems. Or that only people with “problems” need therapy. This is not the case! Therapy is where you go to meet with someone who is trained and skilled in providing resources that help you navigate life’s challenges. Everyone can benefit from that type of support! To the person struggling with anxiety, imagine feeling so confident in yourself that everything in your life reflects that. To the person struggling with a traumatic past, imagine becoming so healed that you can handle whatever else life throws at you. I believe that everyone can work towards healing and wholeness, with the right support. I take a client centered and stregnth based approach. This means that all sessions are client led. I will offer feedback and questions to guide the discussion but never take away from the discussion that the client deems important. I also work to pour positivity into all of my clients and build on their current strenths to help balance any issues that they are working on. I desire to make the therapeutic experience challenging yet comfortable.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I typically complete a free 15 minute consultation with potential clients to determine if we are a good fit. During the first 6-8 sessions, we work to complete the Mental Health Assessment by asking questions to get to know the client. Of course, during this time, the client is also able to bring into sessions whatever they would like to process. I use this process so that clients do not feel pressured to answer questions they may not feel comfortable discussing and to facilitate a more organic therapeutic relationship. After the mental health assessment is complete, a Treatment Plan is created and discussed with the client. Each subsequent session focuses on implementing the Treatment Plan and continually assessing progress towards goals.

I felt very comfortable with the conversations and feedback for any of my concerns I might have had.
My appointment was canceled the morning of. I didn't appreciate that. If u are booked up the ppl shouldn't be allowed 2 make an appointment. We left our jobs early 2 have a session that was canceled. I wouldn't recommend 2 anyone. Then offer 2 give me referrals for other doctors but never did. Good thing I'm not suicidal.
