Getting to know Deidre Kirkem
With more than 10 years of experience in the behavioral health field, I have worked with diverse populations across homeless shelters, foster care settings, schools, and outpatient therapy environments. My background includes providing individual counseling, supporting students with academic and behavioral challenges, and helping individuals navigate complex life experiences.
My approach is grounded in trauma-informed care and guided by a deep belief in the power of self-reflection. I help clients better understand their emotional responses, identify what they truly want from life, and recognize the patterns or burdens that may be holding them back—whether consciously or unconsciously. I am passionate about walking alongside people through their pain, helping them explore it, understand it, and ultimately reduce its power so they can move forward with greater clarity, resilience, and purpose.
What should a new client know about working with you?
My style of therapy gives space for the client to go through every part of what is bothering them. This often leaves time for silence, letting them process their feelings and showing them that they do not always need to rush to the next topic. At times, I may add levity if the client needs it in the moment, but we always remain on topic. I want my clients to know that they control the pace of the conversation, but I am able to share some information about myself if asked.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
I typically start my sessions asking the client what brought them in to see me which leads to information I will use for the intake form. From there I gauge where the client is within their own process of seeking help. We engage in talk therapy for the first few sessions to understand what they want to work on from multiple angles. I tell my clients a bit about myself to start so we can build rapport and ask them how they feel about self-disclosure. From here, I also ask them about what level of 'being challenged' they feel comfortable with, because I do let them know early in the sessions that I challenge with care if ever I observe they are 'stuck' in a situation, pattern, or unhelpful behaviors.
