Diana Canary, MSW

Psychotherapist
VA
My name is Diana Canary, MSW, and I am a master’s-level therapist with a clinical concentration as a psychotherapist, having earned my Master of Social Work degree in May 2025. I work with adolescents ages 12 and older, young adults, and adults who may be experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, mood-related concerns, trauma, grief, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, life transitions, identity development, and other emotional or behavioral challenges. I am especially passionate about supporting individuals who feel overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected from themselves, or unsure of how to move forward. My goal is to provide a warm, supportive, and collaborative space where you can feel heard while gaining a deeper understanding of your emotions, experiences, patterns, and needs. I also enjoy helping clients navigate family dynamics, communication challenges, boundary-setting, relationship stress, and major life changes. Together, we can work toward building greater self-awareness, confidence, healthier coping strategies, and stronger relationships. As I continue working toward independent clinical licensure, my clinical work is supported by ongoing professional consultation and supervision, providing an additional layer of clinical support and collaboration in the care I provide. I believe therapy should feel approachable, supportive, and tailored to the individual. Whether you are working through a specific challenge or simply looking to better understand yourself and create meaningful change, I strive to meet you where you are and help you move toward where you want to be.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe therapy is most effective when you feel comfortable being yourself and confident that you will be met with understanding rather than judgment. My goal is to create a warm, supportive, and collaborative space where you can show up as you are—even if you are still figuring out what you need or where to begin. Life can feel overwhelming, especially when you are navigating difficult emotions, relationships, transitions, or patterns that no longer feel helpful. I am passionate about helping clients better understand themselves, reconnect with their strengths, and develop practical tools for moving forward with greater confidence and self-compassion. I view therapy as a partnership. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, I work to understand your individual experiences, goals, and needs. Together, we can identify what is getting in the way, build on what is already working, and create meaningful changes that feel realistic and sustainable in your everyday life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I tailor therapy to each client’s individual needs, goals, and experiences rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Early sessions focus on getting to know you, understanding what brings you to therapy, identifying your goals, and creating a plan that feels comfortable and realistic. Depending on your needs, I may draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Person-Centered Therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, and trauma-informed approaches. I am also trained in evidence-based childhood trauma practices and may incorporate exploration of early experiences or inner-child work when it can help you better understand patterns, emotions, or relationships that continue to affect you today. Throughout therapy, we will work collaboratively to build practical coping skills, increase self-awareness, recognize unhelpful patterns, and strengthen your ability to respond to challenges in healthier and more intentional ways. My goal is to help you develop greater self-acceptance, confidence, and clarity while building a life that feels authentic, fulfilling, and aligned with what matters most to you.

More information on payments and coverage

We want the payment and insurance process to feel as straightforward and stress-free as possible. Diana currently accepts Aetna insurance through Connected Thoughts Counseling PLLC. Because benefits can vary by plan, we recommend confirming your behavioral health coverage, including any copays, deductibles, coinsurance, or other out-of-pocket costs that may apply. Our administrative team is also available to help with general insurance and billing questions and can assist with clarifying coverage before your first appointment whenever possible. For clients who prefer not to use insurance, or whose plan is not currently accepted, self-pay appointments are available. Sliding fee scale options may also be available based on individual circumstances and availability. We are happy to help make the process as clear and manageable as possible.
