Getting to know Dr. Diane Hoekstra Fitterer

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and trauma therapist with over 30 years of experience helping adults heal from childhood and adult trauma. I specialize in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, a mind-body approach that integrates neuroscience, somatic awareness, and compassionate talk therapy. I work intuitively and holistically, supporting clients in emotional, psychological, and spiritual growth and healing through a gentle, trauma-informed lens. In addition to specializing in treatment of Complex Trauma, I am passionate about working with Women's Issues Across the Lifespan, Depression, Anxiety, Perinatal Mood Disorders, and including Spirituality in therapy. I am highly intuitive and believe we live in a coherent Universe that is for us.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is collaborative. I see myself as the expert in therapy but emphasize that what we focus on and how we proceed is always up to the client. I have been described as having a warm, calm and welcoming presence. My expertise is in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Somatic Therapy) and Trauma Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST).

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the first session, we will review your history and define your goals for therapy. It is also a time to ask any questions you might have concerning how I work in therapy. The first three or so sessions are an opportunity to determine if we are a good fit, which is so important to the therapy process. My sessions start with a check in so that I can know how the client is doing. We may start with a brief meditation or grounding, depending on each client's preference and needs. Typically, my client chooses the focus of the session. I am a present and deep listener, while also noticing nonverbal communication and how regulated a client is. I am a teaching therapist; this means that I like to provide brief explanations of the neurobiology behind interventions.
