Psychotherapist
NY
Hi, I’m Dilim, a licensed master social worker and mental health clinician with more than a decade of experience across social work, youth development, mental health, wellness, education, and community-based settings. I’ve supported adolescents, young adults, adults, parents, and families through counseling, social-emotional support, crisis intervention, care coordination, family engagement, and wellness programming. I especially enjoy working with adolescents and young adults who are navigating self-esteem, confidence, identity, relationships, social anxiety, loneliness, school or career stress, family expectations, boundaries, and major life transitions. I also work with adults who may be navigating relationships, family dynamics, career changes, personal growth, loneliness, or simply feeling ready for something different in their lives. My approach is person-centered, strengths-based, solution-focused, and trauma-informed. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and my role is to create a supportive space where you can better understand yourself, recognize your strengths, process what you’re experiencing, and identify meaningful next steps. As a first-generation Nigerian-American daughter of immigrants, I also understand some of the complexities of navigating identity, culture, family expectations, and your own aspirations. I bring that lived experience with curiosity rather than assumptions, creating space for each client to define their own values, identity, relationships, and goals. Ultimately, I believe therapy doesn’t have to be about becoming a completely different person. Sometimes it’s about getting to know yourself more deeply, trusting yourself, honoring your needs, and becoming more comfortable in your own skin.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm, collaborative, encouraging, and practical. I want therapy to feel like a space where you can exhale, be yourself, make sense of what you’re experiencing, and figure out what comes next. You don’t need to come into therapy with everything figured out. We can start wherever you are. I’ll listen without judgment, ask thoughtful questions, help you identify patterns, and work with you to understand what may be getting in the way of feeling more like yourself. Depending on what you need, our work may include processing emotions and past experiences, building self-esteem and self-compassion, exploring relationships and boundaries, navigating family or cultural expectations, practicing communication skills, making decisions, developing coping strategies, or creating concrete steps toward your goals. I’m also very strengths-focused. I’ll help you recognize progress and strengths that you may overlook, while gently challenging you when it may be helpful. I believe therapy can be both a place to slow down and process and a place to move forward. Some sessions may be more reflective and exploratory, while others may be more practical and goal-oriented. We might talk, practice a skill, role-play a difficult conversation, use mindfulness or reflection exercises, or incorporate creative activities when appropriate. Most importantly, I want you to feel heard, understood, supported, and empowered to make choices that reflect who you are—not who you think you’re supposed to be.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions are an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin understanding what brings you to therapy. We’ll talk about your current concerns, what you’ve been experiencing, relevant background and life experiences, your strengths and support systems, and what you hope to get from therapy. I take a collaborative approach to assessment and treatment planning. Rather than assuming what you need based on a diagnosis or a checklist, I want to understand the person behind the concern and how your experiences, relationships, environment, culture, and strengths may be connected to what you’re experiencing. When appropriate, we’ll identify treatment goals together and revisit them as our work develops. I use talk therapy as a primary part of my practice, while incorporating evidence-informed interventions and practical tools based on your needs and preferences. A typical session may involve checking in about what has been happening since our previous session, exploring thoughts and emotions, identifying patterns, processing experiences, and connecting those insights to your goals. Depending on what would be helpful, we may also practice coping skills, work on communication or boundaries, use mindfulness or grounding exercises, role-play a conversation, or identify a concrete next step to work on between sessions. Some sessions may be focused on deeper processing, while others may be more solution-focused and practical. I don’t believe every session needs to end with homework or a five-step plan. Sometimes the most important work is simply slowing down, feeling what you feel, and developing a deeper understanding of yourself. My goal is for therapy to be a collaborative process where we continually assess what is helpful and adjust our approach as your needs and goals evolve.
