Elliott Skaggs, LMHC

Psychotherapist
NY
I am a licensed mental health counselor with 8 years of experience across community mental health, addiction treatment, inpatient and outpatient settings, telehealth platforms, and private practice. My background includes extensive work with trauma, substance use and addiction concerns, mood disorders, relationship concerns, and major life transitions. While my education and career started in its first year in North Carolina, most of my career was spent in New York City where I worked with a diverse multicultural clientele from many backgrounds and life experiences. I have also developed significant experience providing affirming care to LGBTQ+ clients and supporting concerns related to identity, relationships, self-worth, and belonging. My approach balances acceptance and compassion with accountability. My goal is to help clients cultivate greater acceptance for things beyond their control, while also empowering them to make meangiful changes.

Getting to know Elliott Skaggs

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is compassionate and ecletic, I acknowledge each individual is unique and there are no "one-size-fits-all" solutions. I believe therapy should provide space to go deeper, understand yourself more fully, and approach difficult parts of yourself with compassion rather than judgment. At the same time, I believe meaningful therapy also involves accountability and a willingness to challenge patterns that are no longer serving you. I draw from an eclectic range of approaches, particularly person-centered therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing. Rather than using the same approach with every client, I adapt my work based on your goals, personality, needs, and what I learn about you over time. Some of my approach will involve formal structure, while also holding space for nuance and building rapport. I see my primary function to be ensuring you are getting the right care for your concerns from the stance of clinical methodology, while also acknowledging your humanity and complexity. I attempt to be balanced between being both professional and relaxed in my approach.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I begin with formal clinical assessment and rapport building so that we can understand what brings you to therapy, identify your goals, and determine whether we are a good therapeutic match. The beginning is primarily about determining your clinical needs, how those can be best met, and holding space for us to get know each other and build rapport. As I get to know you, I tailor my approach to your individual needs. Sessions may involve exploring deeper emotional experiences, identifying harmful thought patterns or core beliefs, developing greater self-compassion, learning practical coping or communication skills, and identifying concrete areas for change. As we work together we'll periodically check in about your progress and goals. This will ensure we are achieving meaningful clinical work or help determine if a different approach or type of treatment is needed to adaquately address your needs. My goal is to create a therapeutic relationship that feels supportive and accepting while also encouraging you to take meaningful steps toward the changes you want in your life.
