Evelyn Rivas, MS

Psychotherapist
89-14 Parsons Blvd, Ste 24 5th Fl, Jamaica, NY
I’m a Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and I work with adults 18+ navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship stress, and major life transitions. My background includes extensive trauma-informed work with individuals and families, which shaped the way I show up in the room: calm, steady, collaborative, and deeply respectful of your lived experience and identity. I use an integrative, evidence-based approach that pulls from CBT, Trauma-Focused CBT, Person-Centered Therapy, and mindfulness. Sessions are structured but supportive—focused on helping you understand patterns, regulate emotions, build coping skills, and feel more grounded, confident, and in control. Clients often come to me feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from themselves. My role is to help you slow down, feel safe enough to explore what’s happening beneath the surface, and learn practical tools that make daily life feel lighter and more manageable. Therapy with me is a collaborative process built on genuine connection. As much as you’re learning about yourself, I’m learning about you—your pace, your story, and what you need to feel understood. Together, we build a relationship that feels personal, natural, and effective, so real change can take root.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Beginning therapy is often the hardest step, especially when you’re used to managing everything on your own. I work to make the process grounded, predictable, and comfortable, so you feel supported from the first session onward. We start with an intake session where we map out your history, the symptoms or stressors you’ve been experiencing, and what prompted you to seek therapy now. This naturally leads into a full psychosocial assessment, giving us a clear picture of the emotional, environmental, and relational factors influencing your wellbeing. Using that foundation, we build a treatment plan that reflects your goals—whether you’re working through trauma, stabilizing anxiety or depression, strengthening boundaries, or gaining better control over emotions and daily stress. The plan is flexible and evolves as you do. In ongoing sessions, I combine evidence-based practices like CBT, TF-CBT, mindfulness, and person-centered work. Sessions are structured enough to create momentum, but open enough to meet you where you are emotionally each week. We focus on insight, skill-building, and practical tools you can apply outside the session. A key part of the process is the relationship we develop. Therapy works best when we genuinely understand each other. As much as you’re exploring your own patterns and experiences, I’m also attuning to who you are—your pace, your communication style, what helps you feel safe, and what supports your growth. The goal is steady, meaningful progress that helps you feel more regulated, more self-aware, and more confident navigating your life with clarity and resilience.
