Getting to know Dr. Gary Berkowitz

I am a licensed psychologist with a PsyD in Mental Health Counseling from Temple University and many years of experience in cognitive behavioral therapy. I have had success using CBT to treat anxiety, panic, anger issues, insomnia, and chronic pain. Treatment is goal-oriented, skill-based, and backed by research. I think it is very important to learn to judge yourself and the world less harshly. I believe that our unrealistic thoughts and expectations are major contributors to our discontent. I have found that some concepts from Eastern and Stoic philosophy can help put our lives into better perspective. I particularly appreciate the aspects of psychology grounded in science. As a field, we know a lot about how people learn and how early experiences shape our current moods and behavior. I also like to incorporate current ideas in neurology and physiology that support behavior change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I will teach you to replace ineffective, automatic thoughts and behaviors with more functional ones. You will learn techniques to quiet your mind. We will explore the scientific principles of learning and behavior that will help you make long-lasting changes. We will take a deep dive into your world view so that you can identify inconsistencies between your behavior and core beliefs. We will process your motivation for change and the barriers that keep you from living a more satisfying life. We will examine the impact of your "fight-flight" system on your mood and behavior.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
