Psychotherapist

"Hello, I'm Heather. As a state-licensed independent marriage and family therapist and an independent chemical dependency counselor, I have dedicated my life to serving others. I'm also a proud United States Air Force Veteran and a Christian, which deeply informs my approach to therapy. My passion lies in helping people find hope in any circumstance they may face. I've had the privilege of working with individuals from all walks of life and ages, specializing in family dynamics, substance abuse, and trauma. I'm also a certified trauma counselor (CCTP-II). I believe that everyone has a story that shapes who they are and what they can contribute to their journey. If you have an unhealthy outlook, it's often rooted in past experiences. But change is always possible as long as we are breathing and willing to embrace it. Therapy, in my view, is a collaborative process. It's most effective when you feel comfortable and hopeful about the journey we're embarking on together. My approach is based on a brief and solution-focused model, introduced by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg in the 80s. This strength-based approach helps individuals identify what's working in their lives and what needs to change for greater satisfaction. I firmly believe that people need others to help them along life's journey. My faith gives me hope that you can achieve the changes you desire, as long as you can envision them and work towards making them a reality. In our sessions, I typically take notes and encourage you to do the same, whether during our meetings or in a personal journal.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

By the end of our first or second session, I'll share my perspective on your case and suggest how we should proceed. Therapy is a cooperative partnership where you define the problem areas, and I use my expertise to help you make the desired changes. It's not a passive process; it requires your active involvement and effort to change thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We'll plan our work together, setting goals and methods in a treatment plan that we both commit to. Periodically, we'll review our progress and adjust the plan as needed. Practicing new skills outside of our sessions is crucial, and I'll assign homework to reinforce what we've discussed. Change can be slow and challenging, requiring persistence and repetition, but it's achievable. There are no instant cures, but you can learn new perspectives that will help you change your feelings and reactions. If you're ready to embark on this journey of change and growth, I invite you to reach out. Let's work together to create the vision of your change and make it a lasting reality."
