Getting to know Isolde Sundet

Thoughts and feelings of unworthiness are at the center of most of what brings people to my practice. People who are, by all accounts, successful — and who are quietly navigating things most people in their lives know nothing about but can cause distress, depression, anxiety that feels like it won’t ever resolve. Often these feelings are driven by internal conflicts that we are not even aware of. Therapy is a tool to bring those conflicts to the forefront so we can resolve them. In my experience, just taking the first step and talking about what's going on can reduce stress and help us move forward.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a psychodynamic therapist with over a decade of clinical experience. I trained at Columbia University and hold advanced certification in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT-C) through the International Institute for Emotion-Focused Therapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I work collaboratively. That means we define your goals together and figure out what progress looks like for you specifically. I’m a psychodynamic therapist, which means I’m more interested in the why beneath your symptoms than in offering prescriptive, cookie-cutter methods for self-improvement. In my experience, relationships — and our capacity for intimacy — are often at the heart of finding peace. I am here to help you find clarity when it feels next to impossible — particularly for those who grew up in dysfunctional families, or with narcissistic or emotionally immature parents. My goal is to help you understand how your most formative relationships shaped you — and to find freedom through that understanding, so you can make the choices you truly want to make!

Great experience. Very thoughtful and helpful session.
Working with Izzy was my first experience with therapy. I’ve found her to be very dedicated to her work and knowledgeable about the different areas I’ve struggled with. Mostly I’ve appreciated how genuine and caring she is as a person. I would definitely recommend her to anyone who is seeking help.
Izzy is a great therapist! She really emphasizes focusing on feelings and the deeper root of them. She has also offered helpful tips.
Searching for a therapist amidst the pandemic was a daunting task, but in my initial consultation with Isolde, I felt that I had finally found a good fit. She confidently walked me through her practice and was patient in listening to my reasons for seeking weekly therapy. Isolde has been helping me identify behaviors and patterns that I hope to better understand and overcome in an effort to heal and strengthen myself, and she has played an essential part in the process of self-discovery. I have felt welcomed, comfortable, and free to speak without fear of judgment since the commencement of our sessions.
I've worked with Izzy for several years now and actually sought her out when she started her new practice. As a young professional, she's helped me navigate so many growing pains through the instability of my early 20s. She's been with me as a loved one overcame alcohol dependency, helped me understand old family trauma and helped me heal from relationship trauma, as well. As someone who had the unpleasant experience of shopping around for the "right" therapist, it feels so great to have found Izzy. I love being able to talk to a woman, who understands the POC experience, about my daily struggle against anxiety and depression, which I've been managing for years.
Working with Izzy has been a great experience. She has challenged me and has helped me in addressing my feelings and anxiety without judgement. She has made our sessions a supportive and safe space for me to continue learning about myself and grow as a person.
My therapy experience with you has been eye opening. Your approach is calming yet direct. You pose challenging questions that provoke self reflection and growth. You truly listen and demonstrate that you acknowledge your clients feelings and experiences. Each session I feel I am met with both guidance and encouragement to discover more about my self.
