Getting to know Jack Heinemann

Successful on paper but stuck on the inside? If anxiety feels woven into who you are, or your relationships keep repeating patterns you understand but can't seem to change, you're not looking for coping skills. You're looking to understand why. I'm a psychodynamic psychotherapist in Teaneck, also seeing clients online throughout New Jersey and New York. My work goes deeper than symptom management: together we get at the underlying patterns shaping how you experience yourself and relate to others, so that change actually holds. I work with high-achieving adults and couples on anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, and relationship difficulties. My postgraduate training is in adult psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis at the Training Institute for Mental Health, and I bring that depth to the work while keeping it active, collaborative, and practical. I offer a free 15-minute consultation so we can see if this is the right fit before you commit to anything.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is depth-oriented and relational. Rather than treating anxiety or depression as isolated symptoms to manage, we work to understand the life context and long-standing patterns behind them, which is what makes change last. Sessions are a collaborative dialogue paced to you, aimed at real shifts in how you feel and relate, not just a better week. A note on fit: my practice is best for people seeking insight-oriented, ongoing therapy. I don't treat active substance abuse or acute crises, and I don't prescribe medication. If that's what you need, I'm glad to point you toward the right resource.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In insight-oriented therapy, we don't simply accept your feelings of worry and depression as symptoms of a disorder. Instead, we work together to understand the underlying context that led to your depression, aiming to create lasting changes that alleviate these painful emotions.
