Getting to know James H. Kurtz
Love and work are essential to a meaningful life. Relationships with others define experience, and work gives a sense of purpose. Disturbances in these affect well-being and contribute to an overwhelmed response leading to collapse. As trauma is relational, so is recovery and healing. Having the right therapeutic alliance is a key element and requires attunement and consistency.
Having a weakness, a crisis, or an illness can be a transition to an accomplished strength. With proper support, connection, and engagement, inner resources are accessed that allow for growth, resilience, and the possibility of change, healing, and transformation.
James has over 17 years of clinical experience treating diverse individuals in a variety of settings. As a Mind-Body-Awareness trained therapist, he works with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction.
He holds a Master's in Social Work from San José State University. In addition, he completed extensive practicum training, including Certification in Somatic Experiencing from the SE Trauma Institute; training at the Sierra Institute for Contemporary Gestalt; Professional Training in Hakomi Mindfulness-Based Experiential Psychotherapy in Santa Cruz; iRest Integrative Restoration, an evidence-informed meditation practice for trauma; Certification in Satyananda Yoga Nidra; and completion of 500 hours of Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training.

I really appreciated the opportunity to work with Dr. Kurtz. His somatic approach worked well for me at a time when I was dealing with deep grief around my mother's death.

It took 4yrs to finally be matched with a therapist specializing in areas of high interest to me that are specific to my needs, like a somatic approach connecting from within myself helping me to learn and better understand holistic awareness as well as grant me the safe space to talk through what is affecting my ability to thrive in life that has brought me to seek therapy. James was recognizably a good match from very first appointment based on the vast specialists to choose from on the platform. Impressive, he showed a solution based approach from day one providing education as well as tools to implement that are potential fits in this journey to recognizing and healing self. He seems to have a master teacher approach and I have always felt I am a life long learner and ready to learn how to use each tool given. He provides a gentle yet structured environment that is authentic. A guiding light. Thank you grow therapy.

I felt this therapist was challenging me within 10 minutes of meeting me before ever gaining my trust. He pushed AA on to me, told me I was in denial & that there’s something about myself I do not like. No genuine curiosity about my story. This man just pushed his agenda.
